I worked at Eastman full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Low cost of living in the area Good pay for the region Ability to change jobs within the company

    Cons

Pretty toxic environment currently with periodic and predictable layoffs tied to quarterly earnings cycle. Costa cares only about the EPS and his own compensation tied to it. There are a few good leaders but they are either too naive or just blindly drink the cool aid their direct reports are serving up. Coatings and Inks is a classic example. Back stabbing, sucking up, blatant favoritism, outrageous travel spending, lack of accountability for chosen few, continued drubbings for the rest is a way of life. One of the directors spends significant amount of the departments budget on his frivolous travel and world tours at any opportunity he gets to rack up travel miles and live like a king, not to mention several other unethical behaviors. Cant really blame him if leadership is naive enough to hear his stories and believe him blindly. Hard working and high performing individuals get hung out to dry, sycophants get rewarded. The division is seeing an unprecedented voluntary exodus of employees and employees who are loyal to the organization are constantly reconsidering their choices.

I worked at Eastman full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The team I worked with was my family until management started running them off and replacing them with younger employees that really don't know anything. You were expected to train them and they end up taking your job. Oops this was supposed to be a pro.

    Cons

So many of the reviews have hit the nail on the head. Layoffs are Eastman's answer to cutting costs. Heaven forbid the executive team cut their inflated salaries and travel expenses!! People used to be proud to work for Eastman. Now all anyone wants to do is leave. The school system is the only thing keeping me in the area anymore. I would rather work 2 full-time jobs shoveling manure than go back to Eastman. Treats employees worse than garbage.

I worked at Eastman full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The corporate office building is new with fantastic amenities. Compensation and benefits are great.

    Cons

The atmosphere is draconian. Obedience is valued over performance and can seem like an antiquated way of thinking for experienced employees that are new to the company and trying to promote change. You will find lots of managers that earned their roles by longevity with the company not an ability to lead. If things don't work out, there isn't other employment options in the area. Some managers can be disrespectful to staff. It's a difficult company to become employed with and once onboard there is a sense that you should feel fortunate to have been chosen. The truth is, you have better options.

I have been working at Eastman full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Highly collaborative environment that requires good interpersonal skills to excel. The company and location offer an excellent personal/professional-life balance. Smart and passionate colleagues that are always willing to help if needed.

    Cons

Extreme process orientation can be burdensome in certain situations. Opaque hiring and compensation structures can lead to disappointing results for individual employees. Extreme focus on short-term initiatives creates a somewhat hectic environment that can be detrimental to employee morale. Benefits (401k match and investment options, health insurance, family leave) are sub-par compared to major industry players.

I have been working at Eastman full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Decent benefits, fair pay, good work life balance

    Cons

We got a new CIO about a year ago. That CIO openly admitted to lying about reorganizations and restructuring in an open Q&A session. Company culture is shifting to be a lot more cut-throat with relative performance assessments (forced ranking with set targets for number of people 'not meeting' expectations). Some leaders outside of IT are able exert too much influence over how IT recognizes and promotes talent. Most frustrating recently is when the least competent candidate is selected for leadership potential and despite constantly making poor choices (leading to high performers leaving the company), nothing is done about it.
