Pros
The folks I work with at Sentient are some of the most intelligent, innovative and dedicated people I have met in my career. The home office is literally a mansion with giant chandeliers, a winding staircase and outdoor fountain. The grounds are meticulous and abundant with flowers, and the trees turning colors in the fall is a visual orchestra. The CEO and his family are perhaps the most hospitable people I've ever met. There are heaps of restaurants, bars, museums and apartments within walking distance. The job is challenging and everyone pulls their weight on the team. Sales & marketing team is genius, engineering team incredibly clever, and software team irreplaceable. About once a month we manage to pull a rabbit out of a hat, which is a great skill to add to the deck. Buffalo has a surprisingly strong startup attitude and the summer is bursting with life, festivals and free live music.
Cons
As a small high tech startup there are lots of ups and downs. It can be difficult for people who prefer a steady routine, and there are plenty of blue chip and government jobs for those folks. This company is better suited for someone who craves to sink their teeth into a challenge and reap the rewards of victory. The skills acquired at a company like Sentient will double your resume. Bring a parka if you're coming in winter.
