Pros

-As an engineer, going to work is exciting. You will be tasked to design and build something totally novel and you'll be genuinely driven to do a good job. There are few things that are more exciting than knowing that your goal is to develop the vehicles that will transport people to Mars and beyond. -Significant responsibility with every project you work on. This makes you feel like you really do make significant contributions to each successful flight and test. You won't feel like a cog in a machine whose hard work goes unnoticed. You'll know that your dedication is making this company and the rocket that much better. -Flat organizational structure that allows for open, direct, and frank communication paths between all employees, regardless of title/position. -Real teamwork and sense of camaraderie. You'll be part of a team of that takes on a challenging project together. This mutual struggle builds real friendships that extend well beyond the workplace. It's not uncommon for large groups to go on trips and weekend adventures together. -Smart and supportive colleagues. Chances are, you won't know everything about about designing and building rockets on your first day. People want to see you succeed and do great work. Be ready to learn and be asked to lead very early on. -Getting to travel to launch sites (Cape Canaveral, Vandenberg) is an awesome experience. Beyond just getting to see and work on your rocket on the launch pad, it's amazing to have access to the grounds that define the American space exploration program. -Tons of little perks: cool/modern office, gym membership, high-quality food and coffee, awesome company parties.

Cons

-No one explicitly requires that you work long hours. You are entrusted to do a good job on your project and deliver on schedule, which often means going above and beyond, no matter what that entails. The culture is young, energetic, and willing to do anything it takes to get the job done. This can sometimes lead to overlaps with your personal schedule. Managers are typically very understanding if you need to take a few personal days. -Because of the rapid pace of work, missing even a week can makes you feel pretty out of the loop and behind.

Pros

You learn so much because the work is so freaking intense, its a lot of fun if you're the type of person who loves to get emerged in hard problems. The hours for me were not too bad but I was the exception, all the other interns I was with dealt with 60-70+ hour weeks, some interns came in at 10am and left at 12am, when I say its intense, I'm not joking. This is however very unique to the Starbase location. I've heard Hawthorne is a lot more chill. I honestly despite how challenging the role was always look back on it with a sense of pride in my work, and longing to be back there. It really does feel that you're doing world changing things.

Cons

Very un diverse upper management, I'd say the company is pretty diverse in the lower ranks, but once you start to look at the org chart and see who's in charge, you realize that its mainly just white people. Makes you wonder if as a person of color you too will be able to move up. Housing sucks: there was limited housing on campus for full time employees, you have to wait a year plus to get off the queue and once you're off you only really get tiny homes as the option that are in an inconvenient location. Interns don't even have the option to get on campus housing, they give you 3k in a housing stipend and expect you to find a place in Brownsville. I'd say its very hard to maintain a relationship while working here if you don't have an understanding partner, the work schedule is brutal and you really can't slack off.
