Medical records technician

Working independently. Meet new people at the providers office's you go to. Can't think of any other pros for my 20 word minimum.
Cons
Company and coordinators that do not care about you and do not respond to any of your questions or concerns during your first week. 8:00 am start time really means 6:30 am with drive time with the distance and locations they send you to.. You are required to be at providers office sometimes before they open and before your contact is even there. Makes no sense, but call center is making appointments and they can care less. Printing 100's of cover sheets each day. Get with it and have IT make a program to download your charts to laptop. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out. But what do they care, you are doing the printing on your home printer!! Waste of paper. Oh they reimburse your 6 cents a sheet. Not enough to pay for your toner. Also 25 cents a mile, where the IRS allows 56 cents a mile. So, who is getting the difference? Not you and your vehicle expense, that's for sure! Don't walk -- run away from this company as fast as possible!!

Great opportunity if you are flexible with time and like variety fairly daily
18 Nov 2014 - Medical Records Field Technician in Los Angeles, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
-The company offered me this short-term opportunity even though I had worked in a high level capacity previously -You (my opinion) have the opportunity to interact with the side of healthcare that is hard to get into with out experience or someone you know (providers and facilities) -Paid based on hourly factored with drive time and being on time to site -Your schedule can vary daily so you are traveling throughout a given region -If you are good at understanding various EMR/EHR systems or scanning processes you can finish your onsite visit in less time than allotted or you can stay and work the hours if you need the pay -Sometimes you prove to be a valuable resource to the various onsite staffers on understanding their EMR/EHR system with tips and techniques that may be unfamiliar to them -Performance bonus given at the end of contract if you meet them
Cons
-Occasions where two onsite scheduled for the same day but distance makes being on time unrealistic in my part of the country -Directions provided for a site visit is based on the ideal and shortest distance to get there which would include toll roads....they do not reimburse for toll fees so I avoid the added expense out of my pocket. -No reimbursement for parking, which in other contract work was included reimbursable expense -You end up working more than 30 to close to 40 hours a week but no benefits -No updates on when a project is scheduled to end, which I guess for techs in other places would be a good thing -More times that I would get to a site and the provider's staff tells me they received no confirmation that tech would be onsite and end up leaving or deal with the resentment of accommodating me just to get the visit complete. -Nothing provided as to if you were in line for a bonus or not -When you request time off, they are not very timely to approve -When a onsite is an EMR/EHR record retrieval, you may not know until you are onsite as to what system you will be accessing. This has the tendency to slow your retrieval time if you have to refresh or get up to speed on a system. -No sharing of problems encountered on a site visit so that if another tech needs to go to the site to continue a large chart retrieval, they have to find out themselves any problems. You are then using the provider's staff time to review what could have been shared with other techs.

Do not work here as a Medical Records Field Technician!!!!
15 Dec 2013 - Medical Records Field Technician in Phoenix, AZRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
You work alone and don't have any supervisors constantly looking over you shoulder. That's the only pro.
Cons
The work is repetitive and gets extremely boring just sitting alone in a room all day scanning medical records. Job is not worth the pay because you have to drive distances that are up to 50 miles away (at the least) and don't get paid for gas/mileage until after you have driven for 40 miles one way or more and you only get paid for the drive time (time spent driving in your vehicle) if you drive for 1 hour or longer. Pay for gas is 25 cents per mile after you have driven 40 miles one way (in California. Not sure about other states). So if you drive up to 39 miles one way, you don't get paid a penny for that mileage driven, so if you drive 39 miles one way, 5 days a week and spend less than one hour in the car driving, you don't get paid a penny for gas. I went to more than a few work sites that cancelled on me and told me to reschedule for another day due to the sites not expecting me to show up and work and not even knowing who I was sometimes. So instead of getting paid to work for 8 hours, I would only get paid for 2 hours because the company has to pay you for two hours of work, regardless. I wasted a lot of gas driving to sites that cancelled on me. I lost a lot of money working for this company due to losing hours and having to pay for gas/printer paper, printer ink, paying for parking at hospitals (which they later reimburse you for if you send them a copy of your receipts). This job is extremely boring as you sit in a room, which is sometimes a patient medical room alone with no one around to talk to. It's just you, alone. I put in a two week notice and the company ended up taking me off the schedule early for my last week of work (the week before Christmas). I feel like that is extremely inconsiderate as it is the holiday season, I have bills to pay, Christmas gifts to buy, and now I lose my last week of work because the company decides it is ok to remove me from the schedule and not grant me my full two week notice (another week of work/pay lost). Save yourself. Trust me. Do not work as a Medical Records Field Technician for this company. It is a rip off. I'm no Einstein, but TRUST ME!!!! DO NOT WORK FOR THIS COMPANY! SAVE YOURSELF THE TROUBLE. Sincerely, Former Medical Records Field Technician for ECS. (Dec. 2013).
