Great core business - poor organizational structure

Pros

The company has a wonderful core business with a product that is in strong demand and is priced well. The engineering organization is well staffed and very experienced.

Cons

As the company grows, it becomes apparent that it does not understand how to grow. The structure required to maintain a larger organization does not exist. The original employees and leadership team dominate, as one may expect, but they also decline to take input, thoughts or ideas from others who have worked at medium sized companies. The result is a dysfunction as the company evolves from a small group focused on a core business to a medium sized company with mutliple product lines. There is zero project management function, and the leadership simply cannot comprehend the concept of scope, schedule, budget. Hiring for key roles generally fails as leadership isn't capable of defining the roles or structuring the organization for new hires. The result is a massive unhappiness and turn-over amongst new hires in mid-level positions. Those who understand how to work in a broader organization come and go in frustration while leadership routinely crucifies any new hire with new ideas. Great company for those part of the small core. Stay away anyone with outside experience.

Pros

Collaborative culture. It feels like the rest of the company is easily accessible and people are easy to talk to. Work has never felt stressful to the point where I carry it home with me to finish, however I have seen much of upper management put in lots of after-hours time. Flexible work schedule and casual dress code.

Cons

They have put their foot down on some benefits where it doesn't make sense to. You are given a flexible work schedule, but remote time is limited or not allowed with policies that are very gray. You are only given two days of PTO to start, which is wrapped in with sick pay. This time accrues with a high cap, but it's difficult to call that a benefit when it feels impossible to build vacation time. There does not seem to be much room for upward movement, but it is somewhat of a positive that leadership has stayed consistent for years. It is difficult to tell what the company's goals are aside from producing goals - the workplace feels less cohesive than it did when I began. It's hard to break out of your immediate functional area. Pay is also low to start.

Good overall

Pros

Company culture is great! The open door policy is really fealt and management is transparent about their practices. Tons of free food and perks. They treat their engineers with a lot of respect.

Cons

Leadership can be somewhat controlling with policies. Security, IT, and no working from home all fall into this category. Unfortunately, much of their business is with defense companies, and while there is a lot of money in that industry, ethicality is also a concern.
