I worked at First Responder Emergency Medical Services full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

High level of field staff responsibility meaning you will be salty in a couple years. The field staff are awesome and most of the fire crews are amazing. The 24 hour shifts make it more worth commuting although I now work 48s elsewhere which is a major reason I left. The equipment here is better than some places.

    Cons

Lowest initial pay in the region. If you can last a few years it would get better but most likely the management will find a reason to remove you before you make any decent money. The management is horrible. They won't help the field staff to save their own company (And they just closed their most profitable operation...). They seem to enjoy shooting themselves in the foot as they destroy their reputation. I hear how to avoid this company even now as I work in another state, "The management is out to get their employees". The HR and CQI offices appear to be actively hostile toward the field crews even though they are constantly short staffed. Ive never seen a successful company act this way. Very odd.

    Advice to Management

Replace your HR and CQI people. They have a horrible reputation that has kept numerous people I know from working here. Your poor management reputation proceeds you and most organizations have little respect for you. Respect is earned. Hunting for your employees deficiencies so you can fire them is the worst of all business practices and it shows how little experience you have. Staff 48 hour shifts. The 24s kill your staffing levels.

Bad work environment, bad communication from upper management located in another city. Limited upwards mobility short-term.

    Advice to Management

More communication with lower level staffing, information gathering from community businesses that we work with, better planning on a better long term growth goal.

I worked at First Responder Emergency Medical Services part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great experience with some of the best EMTs, Paramedics, and Firefighters I've ever met.

    Cons

Horrible management. Don't work here if you want to keep a clean work history...

    Advice to Management

Your crews are your best asset. Show them the respect they deserve as they are the ones who make your system function... not you.

I have been working at First Responder Emergency Medical Services full-time for more than a year

    Pros

They don't care about overtime, you can work as much or as little as you want. Flexible scheduling for the most part. Management is kind and it feels like family.

    Cons

The union is absolute garbage. The collective bargaining agreement does a crap job of giving members decent benefits or even protecting us from ridiculous situations that labor laws would normally protect us from. Management does a horrible job of communicating changes within the company and how it will affect employees. The equipment is cheap and some of the worse quality I've used than at other places.

    Advice to Management

Please communicate more openly to employees so that if there is a potential layoff or cut in hours that employees can protect themselves better from a bad financial situation. Also ditch the union. It sucks.
