I worked at GE Global Research full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The work culture and ethics is great. Some of the best people from the country work here and it is an idea and technology machine kind of place. The range of technologies you get to work on are many vast. If you have the right drive and starting skill sets you can really better your career.

    Cons

Growth is largely based on being at the right place at the right time. Being such a vast company the individual recognition can be improved. Compensation isn't the best in the market.

I have been working at GE Global Research full-time

    Pros

GE GRC as global research centers are known internally are great career choice for freshers and greenhorns. You get to explore many different types of problems in the industrial setting without having to worry a lot about a certain project not being very useful to the business. The work life balance is pretty nice for Juniors and the company is quite inclusive and diverse.

    Cons

Being a corporate R & D and cost center means that the research that is done here does not have to be of any use to any of GE businesses. Thus success metrics are often manipulated by execs to look good in front of their bosses. The GE businesses that fund the research often don't care about the outcome and treat the funding as some sort of internal CSR. Thus there is not much push for quality research that is really cutting edge or at least useful. Research here is driven by PowerPoint slides and buzzwords. Often senior execs coin some buzzwords and lower level execs and managers fall over each other to do high school level projects that have some similarity with that keyword further driving down the quality of work. Finally, career growth is slow and comp below market.

I have been working at GE Global Research full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

It is a great group of extremely talented scientist, engineers and can get to work on cutting edge technologies. Good benefits. Decent salary.

    Cons

Recently GRC is changing a lot and loosing its identity, becoming more like a business, loosing regard and respect for scientists. the way things are changing and moving forward, GRC don't need phd's at all. I guess eventually most Phd's will be forced to retire/golden shake hands etc. Some lay offs are already happening.
