I have been working at Gustavus Adolphus College full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Ok level of benefits - the lowest embedded deductible health insurance plan is $2,500, the next is $3,250K, and the last one is $5,000 for individual deductibles.
currently the HR website doesn't list the vision and dental option (employee & employer paid for) but I am assuming it will as we move into open enrollment.
The faculty and college staff are generally friendly and mostly helpful. The college has a fairly good physical appearance and is generally well maintained.
President Bergman is doing all she can to raise money and is doing a great job at it. Frankly she is the only reason I stay here; she is the sliver of hope that thing might get better.

    Cons

Not a lot of camaraderie or feeling of community anymore due to lots of turn over and constant budget cuts, no raises (the average 3% meant some people got 5% and most got less than 2%), and shrinking benifits.
Adminstration has had a lot of turn over and really have no idea about what it takes to do our jobs and still do all the 'extra' work they keep dreaming up. Every new administrator wants to change the policies, procedures, forms, and the timelines when the forms are due, and then throw more forms and committees at us. The various administrative deans have all been a disastrous parade of demanding primadonnas who only criticize the people outside the admin building. They offer phony speeches about how much 'we appreciate all that you do' one minute and the next moment they are doubling down on the workload, cutting budgets, and playing departments off another while expecting us to donate our salary to the college. Various departments have started to compete, and pretty viciously sometime, for the few staff replacements that might be bestowed on people in desperate need of help.

    Advice to Management

    1. Get a clue - we can't serve students, keep everything in picture perfect order, meet every deadline, serve on all the committees, and wade through an endless stream of forms and meeting without some help.
    2. Stop hiring more and more VP and Associate Provosts every year while cutting staff and faculty positions. Or else stop telling students that they can and should expect top notch service from faculty and staff when most academic departments are understaffed by 20 to 40% with the same for the staff positions.
