I have been working at Hatch full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Company has a good vision and purpose described in a Manifesto. Great technical people with a variety of work. Lots of opportunity to learn from experience.

    Cons

Communication from middle management can improve.

I worked at Hatch for less than a year

    Pros

Really knowledgeable and experienced engineering team. Great facilities and resources. A really "well-oiled machine".

    Cons

Has the sort of "corporate consultant" vibe also there is a lot of repetition in the work that is done depending on the group. Apparently job security is a bit of an issue.

    Advice to Management

Continue to leave power in the hands of the group leaders so that the sub groups can operate fairly autonomously without a ton of bureaucracy slowing things down.

I have been working at Hatch full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Interesting work, awesome people. Build relationships that will last a lifetime.

    Cons

More like a bunch of small companies than one big company in many ways. Subject to boom-bust cycles. The quality of experience you get depends on circumstances and who you know. Lack of effective performance review with no direct connection to promotions, salary and stock offers. Word of mouth replaces a real system with obvious potential for biases or disconnection from reality.

    Advice to Management

This is hard one - the external circumstances dictate. Compared to other similar places, Hatch is a great place to work. The place only survives because of the employees - young and old - and their tendency to go above and beyond to ensure the best possible product - never forget that.

I have been working at Hatch full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Large variety of work. Projects span many industries and often require unique solutions. A very horizontal company making access to management or other parts if the business quite simple. There is a position somewhere within the company that can fit any set of interests and expertise.

    Cons

A good set of official core values diluted by actual actions taken by management. Opportunities often require being in the right place at the right time. This makes it easy to "miss the boat" or not provide the client with the most qualified person for the job. During slow periods scavenging hours becomes quite common.

    Advice to Management

Commit longer periods to testing out new systems and strategies. The current trend is to make drastic changes too quickly. The company has the flexibility to respond quickly to changing economic conditions, but that does not mean it has to. Many new initiatives and strategies are jettisoned before they would have a chance to gain traction.

I worked at Hatch full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Very steady. People are nice. - I recall they had a policy where no one really got laid off during a downturn. Everyone just took a pay cut.

    Cons

    - Granted I was one year out of university but the work wasn't terribly challenging - Slow pace for someone more used to faster environments - I caught a couple of my bosses looking for other jobs on monster.com
