The payoff 'Exceed Expection' doesn't mean a thing
22 Jul 2013 - Teacher in RotterdamRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences offers plenty of opportunities and support to grow and to develop yourself. You're a given quite a lot of responsibilities and often its you and your colleagues who decide which direction to take (as long as concerns teaching). Over the past 10 years I have learned a lot while working for the orginastion.
Cons
The payoff 'Exceed Expection' seems to be a rather hollow phrase. Once you decide to really to challenge yourself to 'exceed expections' (of students, colleagues, and industrial partners), you'll end up drowning in a Kafkaesque bureaucracy, which is managed and developed by a host of staff members who have no clue about education or teaching. Furthermore, it seems that the organisations lacks the capacity to learn from its mistakes. I see managers making the same mistake over and over again. This illustrates the real problem of Rotterdam University. Most of its senior management is rather incompetent, they simply lack some basic management skills and domain expertise (education). They rather optimize processen than really caring about the real value of an educational organisation. Overall, the operational quality of the organisation is poor, which makes working for Rotterdam University very stressful.

Hogeschool Rotterdam
30 Sep 2012 - English Lecturer in RotterdamRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Diverse student population. A large institute as a whole but various smaller locations so it doesn't feel massive, yet many career opportunities. Dedicated staff. Good teaching facilities.
Cons
Working hours for teachers are systematically underrated. Sometimes too little support from administration. Eating facilities are limited. Beginning of term is always chaotic.

Good research culture, not supported by management

Knowledgeable and dedicated colleagues made it a pleasure to work here. Students were keen to be involved in research projects, and we could support them to be involved easily.
Cons
Management changed policies in a way that made most research projects impossible, Also had difficulty making links with academicsa/courses outside immediate department.
