I have been working at Hospital for Special Surgery full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great established hospital. Amazing benefits, they are always giving you time off to use and encourage you to use it! (Over 6 weeks as full time RN) Competitive pay. Tuition reimbursement. Good clinical ladder to excel in. Yearly scrubs. Patient to nurse ratio is mostly good, depending . No more than 1:6 with average of 1:3/4 on inpatient floor.

    Cons

Non union (more pay!) but have been told to watch your back and double check everything you do...other than that I cannot say anything bad.

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Hospital for Special Surgery full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The hospital name has value in certain circles, and can potentially get you interviews elsewhere.

    Cons

The working culture is incestuous because they hire people based on their monetary donations and familial connections. They also give non-disclosure agreements so the major issues can remain unknown. (major issues being discrimination, sexual harassment etc). During the height of COVID they allowed nurses to get 80% of their salary while they "worked" from home for months, meanwhile the surrounding hospitals (NYP, MSK) were desperate for front line help. Employees who are highly favored receive a promotion about every year or so, while others who were there longer remained (and still remain) in the same position. It is an elitist environment that prioritizes ivy league education over skills. Their executive team is ALL white, despite saying they have a diverse culture because they have women (who are also white) in leadership. The benefits package is surprisingly expensive and limited considering it is a major healthcare institution. Their pay distribution is extremely uneven favoring more senior positions. Some senior level employees make over $500k a year, while only 1 or 2 levels down is a $3-400k difference! Almost all maintenance and low level positions are hispanic while the higher you go the whiter it gets.

I worked at Hospital for Special Surgery full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Great training for new hire.

    Cons

There’s a lot of racism going on in the rehabilitation department in the main hospital. Managers and directors promote whomever they want even though employees don’t meet the qualifications .The director is behind all and acts as if she cares but it’s all lies, I’ve seen many things and I’ve heard many awful things said about employees. It’s crazy how in the world we live in we still have to face with discrimination at work. I hope things change for the better.
