RecommendsNeutral OutlookNo Opinion of CEOI worked at Hot Topic part-time for more than 5 years
Pros
Great discount Flexible schedule with a focus on evenings and weekends so perfect for students
Cons
Managers really only promoted friends Outside hires for management meant sales associates often knew store better than managers Even when I became a manager I still didn’t have many hours or competitive pay

Neutral OutlookNo Opinion of CEOI worked at Hot Topic
Pros
I worked my way up the totem pole and was respected among my peers & leadership. I had a great team that worked hard for our store & were very dedicated. A great discount to a place that you love to shop.
Cons
After almost a decade with the company & accumulating over 190 hours of combined sick & vacation pay I realized this wasn’t a practical job for a work/ life balance. Headquarters unrealistically planned tasks to the teams & was always inconsistent. My managers were stressed & under paid. Sales associates had too many requirements & got paid minimum wage with little to no growth with the company.

Doesn't RecommendNegative OutlookNo Opinion of CEOI have been working at Hot Topic part-time for more than a year
Pros
The best things about working here are the discount, the coworkers and some of the regulars. It's super fun and I've enjoyed it more than any other place I've worked.
Cons
The pay is ridiculous compared to how much work you have to do. With all of the responsibility of being a sales associate, you'd think you'd get paid more than minimum wage or at least get more than 10 hours a week. Not only are the Associates underpaid, but Store Management is also horribly paid. This more than likely isn't a long run job for most people.

Negative OutlookI have been working at Hot Topic part-time for more than a year
Pros
Good job to start out Friendly sales associates Lots of leeway No dress code 40% off discount Creative freedom at times Self directed job
Cons
Difficult to move up Promises of raises never happened Low pay for excessive work Rude store managers High turn over Was told sales associates are disposable HR is not reliable The way the let people go is wrong , you’re just taken off the schedule and you’re expected to take the hint but they might schedule you three weeks later after not working and they expect you to show up and if not you’re fired . after a year the low pay and no raise or commission takes a tole and all the little things add up and push you out the door

No Opinion of CEOI worked at Hot Topic part-time for more than a year
Pros
You get to wear what you want Great music (when the player works) Encourage a new generation of weird kids Stay up to date on all the latest shows/movies With the sink or swim mentality, those who can survive the high stress learn A LOT in a short amount of time
Cons
No matter what position you’re in, there are high expectations and high stress for the littlest pay possible. This can be one of the hardest places to work at in the mall for management. Due both to budget constraints and people frequently quitting, the team is extremely small. If someone gets sick, there are no other options for backup. Either you or the other two other employees HAVE to cover their full shifts within an hour’s notice. If not, you risk your job. Sometimes you will be expected to help at other regional stores overnight (same pay and no lodging) or go a full week without a day off. As a sales associate, you will be given 2 to 6 hours per week but could be called in at any moment, on any day to come in. Yes, you are expected to be on call for a minimum wage job. The amount of hours you are scheduled in the first place is dependent on how often you can pick up surprise shifts. This company touts their support for mental health yet puts their small store teams in the highest stress environment possible. While good management and a bigger team can help relieve some of the tension (such as in more successful, bigger stores) this tiny location in particular suffers big time.

Cons

Doesn't RecommendNeutral OutlookNo Opinion of CEOI worked at Hot Topic part-time for more than a year
Pros
Making monthly plan and comp get you a bonus.
Cons
Major push for credit card applications and sales. While minimum wage went up sales associates and key holders got raises; However ASMs and SMs did not. It got to a point where as an ASM I was making $0.10 above my subordinates. Became to be not worth it and the company was not willing to change it. Asking for time off or having any emergencies and needing time off is like pulling the teeth from you DM.

Pros
You meet really great co workers. You get a nice 40% discount and they are flexible with hours and scheduling.
Cons
The pay is TERRIBLE. I only make $7.50 as a sales associate. My boss told me I couldn’t hangout with my other sales associates and they rarely look At my availability. They expect you to do so much with such little pay.

Doesn't RecommendNegative OutlookNo Opinion of CEOI worked at Hot Topic part-time for less than a year
Pros
The store was centered in a popular mall, and was only a few feet away from the food court.
Cons
There was obvious favoritism among management staff and all of the managers were very overbearing on sales associates. The store was cramped and the slightest misstep was met with excessive scolding. Additionally, most of the managers would simply stand behind the cash register and "check inventory" while barking orders at the employees working in the front of the store. Those who had worked there for longer periods of time were shown obvious favoritism and new workers were treated poorly.
