Nightmare for International Students
Pros
1. The manager said that the company could sponsor H1b for regular employees (which is attractive to international students who needs VISA, but you should know every opportunity comes with risk). 2. The manager said that they would provide health insurance (although none of my colleagues and I had it during the time I joined and left the company, I still hope they will remind this). 3. Good relationship with some restaurants and chances to try some Chinese food. 4. Friendly co-workers, majority of them are young international students. 5. Nice office location with easy transportation (Manhattan office). 6. Good place to learn business skills.
Cons
1. Two to three months probation period with the minimum wage of New York City and low rate to become a regular employee. It means you may immediately get fired after the probation period even though you did everything they asked you to do…If you're an international student working on OPT, I wish you deeply understand the risks of maintaining a status 2. Rigorous KPI is required and stressful working time. Hard to get off work on time if your boss is working over time. Extra working hours are unpaid (extra hour can be exchanged to vacation. However, it's hard to be realized, you may guess the reason). Punching APP is used. Daily and weekly reports are required. Daily meeting is required. 3. Some work needs oncall at night, weekend and even holidays. Of course, not paid. 4. Dual role problems are serious. The company structure is terrible. Someone plays both BD and HR, and often throw her BD work to marketing staffs. Marketing staffs have to work extra hours to do her business because she is in charge of staff evaluation. 5. The responsibility assignment changes too frequently, such as changing of working location (Manhattan, Flushing) and regional job duty. 6. The company culture is unhealthy and the management is full of tricks: miscalculation of wage and commission; no actual incentive for regular staffs, only long-term oral promises…
