I have been working at Hy-Vee full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Work/life balance is good. When you're home, they leave you alone. Pay is acceptable. You'll get the industry standard. Time goes by very quickly as there is always something to do. Most co-workers are great to work with, with the exception of a few know-it-alls and "cliquey" backstabbers, but that's anywhere these days. Virtual autonomy. You are somewhat in charge of your own business within a business.... "Employee owned."

    Cons

Never enough help. Labor seems to be the biggest struggle. They'll cut hours to save money for bonus checks while work remains. No training. No direction. You will need to learn on the fly. Even a retail warrior, like myself, with years of experience in other retail fields, needed to have some on-boarding. Don't expect it. The only way you'll learn is to screw up first. Upper Managers are hit or miss. ... Some work hard and know the business, others would rather sit and gossip in the office all day while you're working hard on the floor wondering how they got that promotion. You will be expected to help other parts of the store, mostly checking and bagging, as they're short handed more often than not, which can set you back hours from getting your own work done, then expect your Store Director to question why something in your own Dept isn't done. Your Store Director sets the tone. Mine doles out more criticism than recognition, which creates unnecessary stress among managers. This in-turn causes employees to be stressed, which then causes unnecessary turnover. Questionable buying from corporate. You will receive too much forced-shipped, unneeded inventory that is DOA from corporate and then be told it's your fault for having too much inventory.

    Advice to Management

Corporate does listen, but leaders set the standard in stores. Many of your "leaders" are doing their jobs wrong. Managers/Directors must be coaches, mentors, and focus on recognizing acheivements, more than constantly pointing out failures. Turnover is high in some stores. You need to give associates updated tools necessary for their success, which includes constant positive reinforcement, and a step by step,... elbow to elbow training program worthy of developing future leaders. Otherwise, you will die on the vine. You seem like you're throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks and want to be the everything store. Do you want to be a GNC? Walmart?...Nordstrom? You need to quickly clarify and define what you want to be as a business, then devote all resources to accomplishing that goal. "If you want to be everything to everybody, you'll end up meaning nothing to nobody."

    Cons

No life work balance, they are never fully staffed, they make promises they never deliver, gossip fest from top management down to base level associates

I have been working at Hy-Vee full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Good Benefits, good coworkers, flexible schedule (depending on your department head)

    Cons

Cutting hours. Not enough labor to get the work done that needs to be. This makes employees and customers upset.

    Advice to Management

You can't run a business based on customer service and keep running labor hours at the bare minimum and expect shelves to stay full and new products to get set. You are driving customers away with empty shelves and long checkout lines.

I worked at Hy-Vee full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

You get paid and get bonus checks every quarter that's about it.

    Cons

Upper management thinks mighty of them selves. This company has gone down hill and is very money hungry. Everything they do is for publicity. It's not the same company it was when I started. Management will throw you under the bus in a heartbeat.

    Advice to Management

Pull your head out. GET RID OF MARKET GRILL. Let your department managers run their department.

I have been working at Hy-Vee full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Benefits like 401k, bonuses if the store is profitable , employee owned, nice environment, work with the public, friendly coworkers

    Cons

The upper management talks down to non management workers, the Store Directors are rude and dismissive, there is not much diversity in most stores

    Advice to Management

Treat all your employees with respect and show support for everyone, not just upper management and relatives they have working for them

I have been working at Hy-Vee full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Great pay and great employees

    Cons

The upper management is horrible to work with. The bullying lack of training low morale. For a store that's supposed to Be employe owned we know nothing of how much we make or sell. The customer can run over the employees and upper management goes along with that. The language that management uses to the employee needs to stop.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees better! Quit the bullying, lying and train the employees. All of you management want the power over the other. Pleases, thank you goes a long way.

I have been working at Hy-Vee for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good company, strong industry leader, good benefits and work environment. Customer interaction and always stay busy. Great co-workers, solid pay for entry-level employment.

    Cons

Sometimes too much to do and not enough workers to handle the load. Management sometimes overlooks pay increases for long time employees.
