I have been working at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The caliber of the people working there is high. ILM is the best at what it does!

    Cons

There is HIGH turnover in production. The salaries are laughably low and coordinators are underappreciated in general. You have to leave the company and return if you want to get promoted beyond Coordinator.

    Advice to Management

There is zero focus on retention.

I worked at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Talented artists (for the most part).

    Cons

Insane hours, zero staff appreciation, poorly managed, a lot of egos, very corporate atmosphere.

    Advice to Management

7 day weeks and 12+ hour days should not be considered as normal regardless of client commitments and looming deliveries. Creative leads need to be managed correctly which in turn will reduce pressure on artists and production.

I worked at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    - Some people are great to work with - They are attempting to expand their education structure, but no one has time to go to the classes - Company is led by women - Dem Disney benefits doe

    Cons

    - Too much legacy preventing updates to simple newer technology - No budget to fix annoying bugs in internal software - Weird internal politics - Poor long term crew planning - Not much room for promotion

    Advice to Management

The senior management seemed to not care about the artists, or even the heads of the company and their goals. Production is relatively taken care of, but something is lost in translation to caring for the artists, who are the reason behind multi-billion dollar films succeeding. Give artists raises upon achievements within the company.

I worked at Industrial Light & Magic for less than a year

    Pros

Best VFX house in the business Gorgeous location. Fantastic facility. On-site cafeteria is great. Cool perks such as screenings and guest speakers. Film history in the corridors. Disney perks including silver pass.

    Cons

These guys will own you. We're talking projects that are PLANNED to scale from 50-55 hour weeks up to 80 hour weeks as they get into crunch. Be prepared to live here. Your kids will cry at your fading memory. Some serious "cool kids club" stuff happening from some of the long-timers in production. My experience was pretty negative in terms of the people who I worked with.

    Advice to Management

Company culture needs to be about more than how cool and awesome your work is. Work-life balance matters.
