I have been working at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Not one besides the fact it's got this big name and good benefits.

    Cons

If you are not friends with the right group of people you are out. You might say that's any company out there but I've been at almost all of the big companies in the industry. Nothing even comes close the how ILM works.

    Advice to Management

Stop giving out any kind of work related special treatment to your friends. It's so painfully obvious. Stop treating your drinking buddies in the departments like employees first class and the rest like disposable attachments. Stop giving them the best work unconditionally and the rest who doesn't suck up to the gods of the departments are neglected. Stop giving long contracts and staff to only your drinking buddy sweat...

I have been working at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

You get some perks, and sometimes if you are lucky you get to work on a nice project, and if you are very very lucky you get a nice shot and if you are very very very lucky, the sup will not take it before you finish it to give it to one of his preferred accolytes and call it his own and add it on his reel.

    Cons

Everything. It is ruled by americanised culture, high school back-stabbing and rumours. You need to have your nose completely browned out to get a few decent shots. You need to take condescending treatment very well cause even if you are smarter or better learned (very easy thing at ILM) than the higher ups, they will regardless tell you how to do a roto...that's right, petty ignorant behaviour left and right. Advice to Management

Start giving bonuses to hires no matter the contract length, it's immoral what you are doing. Maybe you need undercover people to check the hire ups behaviour? Sing, Van are a mess, people need to get axed.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Relax, non challenging work environment. Great for stable paycheck with little fuss. Year round tropical weather.

    Cons

Nothing challenging ever goes to Singapore. Not a place for ambitious artists to be. No chance to increase income - no overtime pay. Time off in lieu cannot be cashed out.

    Advice to Management

It's time for de-layering. You have way too many dinosaurs on the shelf.

I have been working at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

-have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects -some disney perks, movie screenings and merchandise given -majority of the co-workers are professional and friendly

    Cons

-takes years to move up the ladder -the shots for this site is often boring and is subject to last minute work given from other sites -OT during weekdays is uncompensated -almost every project requires weekend work which is compensated with time off but the time off often has difficulty getting approved

I worked at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Generally great people, good projects, nice perks.

    Cons

Leadership constantly assures staff of commitment to SF location, but bulk of work keeps going to competing divisions in Vancouver and London, and head count continues to go down. As such, management values its talent substantially less these days. No opportunities to advance, and raises have been replaced by meager bonuses. There's been a real disconnect/disinterest in day-to-day artist experiences and performance...

    Advice to Management

With all the incentives in Vancouver, Montreal, and London, it is admittedly tough running a VFX house in San Francisco. It seems like there's a lot of work in smaller US films that can be done (too small to be worthwhile working overseas?). Management also needs to change its DNA. It doesn't need to get all sweet and cuddly, but it does need to make an effort to really engage with productions/artists more to know who's...
