I worked at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Nice deck to eat lunch on.

    Cons

Really poor management, lacking professionalism, poor organizational systems, work permits forgotten about resulting in artists having to leave, terrible benefits, terrible overtime food. Seems to be run by a bunch kids that don't know anything about the visual effects industry.

    Advice to Management

Hire managers and producers with experience that your artists can look up to and respect.

I worked at Industrial Light & Magic full-time

    Pros

Some nice perks like speaker series that you don't get at other companies

    Cons

The crowd can be gossipy and clicky

    Advice to Management

Management should be more engaged and supportive of employees

I worked at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    - Some people are great to work with - They are attempting to expand their education structure, but no one has time to go to the classes - Company is led by women - Dem Disney benefits doe

    Cons

    - Too much legacy preventing updates to simple newer technology - No budget to fix annoying bugs in internal software - Weird internal politics - Poor long term crew planning - Not much room for promotion

    Advice to Management

The senior management seemed to not care about the artists, or even the heads of the company and their goals. Production is relatively taken care of, but something is lost in translation to caring for the artists, who are the reason behind multi-billion dollar films succeeding. Give artists raises upon achievements within the company.

I worked at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great work environment, great co-workers, creative environment, good salary, big budget visual effects projects, collaborating with Hollywood A-List Directors and Producers, travel to locations.

    Cons

The big budget projects involve long hours (average 50-60 hours per week), that often create stressful work schedules that are complicated by low budgets and combative "studio suits."

    Advice to Management

Please pay attention to budgeting, scheduling and staffing to improve quality and reduce stress. Good communications between ILM and studio are critical as well as management of the project.

I have been working at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Nice office, interesting projects, most of the employees are nice and friendly, daycare on site, subsidized gym on site, great SF location

    Cons

ILM treats production staff as resources. They pay them very little, lie about distributing yearly bonuses and raises, and hold the fear of your contract not being renewed over your head. Why do you think there is so much turnover?

    Advice to Management

Look at how the production staff are being treated and paid.

I have been working at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

You will get the opportunity to work on some of the best projects, and with some of the most talented people in the industry, at least on the artist and technical side.

    Cons

Forget about advancement, it happens at a glacial pace. Pay does not keep up with cost of living so prepare to make less each year. Also pushing innovative ideas through, that go beyond what you can accomplish on your own without impacting their pipeline, will be a challenge. If you are up for the challenge, don't even bother with the original San Francisco office. Disney has figured out how to pluck the "magic" from...

    Advice to Management

The management team does not come from within the pool of artists and technicians, making it impossible for them to make educated decisions regarding technology, or to properly value the people actually doing the work. Fire half of your selves.

I worked at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Top projects in the industry, decent pay depending on location. Fantastic people that all want to accomplish the best work around. Each location has varying benefit packages. Upper management communicates well with all levels throughout company. There is a reason so many employees have stayed with them so long. I would absolutely work for them again, likely in a different location.

    Cons

As my title states, know what the company is and what you want to get out of them. More often than not you are seen to provide one thing and that's it. Acknowledge that fact and get out of them what you need and move on. If you are a lucky one to have a path then fantastic. If not, find another company and know that you worked on hopefully one of the great shows. Often gets themselves into too many shows, reduced schedules,...

    Advice to Management

Update production tracking process to not rely solely on email Accept that your proprietary software works and stop trying to rewrite it Develop a functional and communicated advancement structure to those whom show they want to invest with the company

I worked at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Work with some of the brightest people in the World, on some of the most amazing projects in Entertainment.

    Cons

Work with some of the most petty, passive-aggressive, and dysfunctional production people ever... It's inherent in the culture, sort of like the reverse World in ST:TOS "Mirror Mirror"... Artists and Technology staff get ahead by skill and knowledge, while Production staff gets ahead through Social Darwinism—Only the folks who fit the pathological profile of the higher end of the food chain will progress.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the "Coalition of the Unwilling", those who have been happy with the status quo of the George days, and embrace the disruptive innovators.
