I have been working at King full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - Solid place to start a game career or brush up your skills in a bigger company and add big IPs to portfolio - Still attracts top talent, so lots of great people: fun to work with and plenty to learn from (but many great people have left or on their way out) - Chill working culture: no deadlines or hard pressure to deliver (it also means that many people get lazy and stop caring though) - Relocation packages when hiring, moving to other locations, secondments etc. - people are usually taken good care of

    Cons

    - No clear direction or strategy aside from keeping Candy alive, leading to slow decision-making when it matters, and people not clearly understanding what's expected from them in the end (leading to high levels of stress despite no crunch) - Extremely short-term focus, lack of investment in innovation and things that last like employee engagement and loyalty - Almost never saying "no" to money: values are mostly words repeated in official communications, actions show that we mostly care about revenue and pleasing execs - Lots of knee-jerk decisions at all levels without much consideration of impact on morale and momentum, leading to a lot of low-impact, uninspiring activity - Success theater broadcast in every all-hands and smaller meetings: lines between failure and success are blurred, makes it hard to stay optimistic or to put in real effort

    Advice to Management

    - Increase transparency, be honest when things don't work and be clear about your real agenda - Stop shuffling the same people between old and new leadership roles and bring new leaders for new challenges - Put your money where your mouth is, show how you choose your employees and your players over immediate income - Follow a rigorous standard of managing changes, stop dropping news like bombs on people - Create a clear direction and allow your amazing talented people to create successful solutions to get you there: foster integrity, trust, ownership and risk-taking

I worked at King full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    • Annual company offsite (Kingfomarket) is epic • Friday Drinks, Gaming Area, Balcony, Office Gym, Breakfast, Snacks are great • Extra holiday and company benefits very good • Highly competent colleagues (mostly) • Competitive Salary (in my business area) • Great work life balance • Young and vibrant employee base meaning it's often quite fun

    Cons

    • Zero innovation, King is the definition of an "optimisation" business • Declining user base, declined 50% (250M) since I joined. So making more money from a shrinking pool of users using smart methods, optimisations and Ads • Slowly cutting back on the perks and heavily reduced investments into new IP, new games and any kind of innovation, it's slowly becoming more corporate and less fun every day (inevitable) • CEO (Riccardo) finally left which is very sad although also inevitable. Humam is a good operator and does his best, but it'll never be the same • Mostly saturated for progression but very team dependent (some are very good, some suck)

    Advice to Management

    • Keep promoting good young talent, but be very careful with whom you give headcount. I've heard too many bad stories at King of terrible people managers who get given headcount when they shouldn't and are just great IC's • Complete transparency is something that Riccardo practised and created a strong sense of identity at King, that disappeared and needs to come back - talk about the hard things and take responsibility like he did • Keep up the optimisations and refining the games but be careful not to burn/push the player base too much • I'd love to see a new King franchise outside of Match 3 actually make it to launch Work with AB on getting some great IP, the fact Call of Duty Mobile is made and completely monetised by Tencent (probably with an epic rev share to them) kind of sucks!
