I worked at King & Spalding full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Tons of exposure to different areas and projects / Working with smart people that were trusted in their field

    Cons

Way too much work put on admin staff without expectation of additional hires. The firm grew revenues, profits and the equity partnership, but that never translated to additional resources for functional departments. It only translated to additional work.

    Advice to Management

Grow the support structure with the business

I have been working at King & Spalding full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

People/Culture, flexible schedule, get to work on exciting and topical cases, good place to start your legal career and get to learn how a large law firm operates.

    Cons

Extremely difficult to move from the discovery practice group into a substantive practice group at King & Spalding. Likely you will be doing only discovery you're entire time at K&S if hired as a project attorney. Terrible benefits for the Project Attorneys.

    Advice to Management

More formal employee reviews (basically non-existent). More formal job track for project attorneys

I have been working at King & Spalding full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Excellent benefits. Ability to complete higher education goals and maintain stable employment. Beautiful offices located in Midtown Atlanta. If you are ambitious and work hard, you can find enough interesting work to keep you busy for a couple of years.

    Cons

Job has absolutely no room for internal growth. LPAs are generally treated poorly and assumed to be incompetent. Notoriously toxic culture. Tenured LPAs are cliquish, miserable, and unmotivated with a history of relentlessly bullying others without consequence. The LPA position is shifting towards a younger crowd, (college grads with zero work experience who just want to stay a couple of years). Tenured... LPAs are increasingly fearful of being replaced and take this out on the younger hires. Instead of cultivating an environment that welcomes new hires and encourages the older employees to feel more secure in their roles, management furthers the divide by pitting employees against each other and failing to squash bad behavior and mindless gossip.

    Advice to Management

Provide more internal growth opportunities, including executive level assistant roles, to those who are motivated to work. Foster security among the Tenured LPAs by recognizing and rewarding their work. Recent policies stripping them of their PTO and other earned benefits are not helpful or encouraging, nor do they reward their loyalty over the years. I can almost understand why some act the way they do. At... the same time, the firm should seek to curb the bad behavior rampant within the LPA team. Further, managers who gossip to everyone, about everyone, have no place in a supervisory role.
