I worked at Land O'Lakes full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Started there in 2014. Startup culture with high growth vision, generous benefits, talented colleagues, an inspiring place to work where most people were happy to be there and felt good about the future.

    Cons

Culture shift after merger with United Suppliers. They pulled back on the benefits that made talented people want to work there. Restricted vehicle use, stopped issuing cell phones, no more social events, no more alcohol on work trips: things that made people like working there. And that was before the layoffs started. Bit by bit they decimated the sales force and the research groups, so it kinda made you wonder when you would get the call. People stopped being so excited about their jobs. Winfield really hurt themselves when they rejected a partnership with their biggest nationwide retail customer, and that customer ended up going a different direction totally and finding a new supplier. I'm not sure the present leadership is doing as well as Policinski.

    Advice to Management

Sometimes fringe benefits are worth more than they cost. Also, you're too focused on lesbian empowerment and Uber Freight now. Woo-hoo. That's not going to sell more Interlock.

"Chasing every management trend in absence of winning strategy"

    StarStarStarStarStar

I have been working at Land O'Lakes

    Pros

No shortage of good, motivated coworkers. HQ facilities are nice.

    Cons

Decision-making is broken. Even relatively small decisions are pushed up two levels or more than they should be, meaning those closest to the business spend their time rationalizing and explaining the need for such and such decision, rather than being able to decide and execute and evaluate. In the absence of winning marketplace strategies, we’ve been chasing every management fad to its predictable dead end: zero-based budgeting, open environment office, looking to high-priced consultants for answers.

    Advice to Management

Entrust your people to make decisions appropriately. You hired us to make a difference - let us. You’ll be surprised to learn how much the people on the frontlines really know about this business and what it could be. Just ask and listen, and have some humility about how the marketplace works today. Clearly articulate a winning strategy, and make sure that employee incentives are realistic and tied to the strategy. Make sure that the metrics our incentives are based on align with the strategy. Stop throwing good money at consultants. Let’s invest in our businesses and people instead. I guarantee the return will be much higher.

    Pros

Super cool CEO highly focused on driving change through product innovation, technology, process. Smart people dedicated to doing what's right. Great benefits.

    Cons

Tough times for ag. But these headwinds only create more urgency and more opportunities for people who want to drive change. If you want to effortlessly coast on "the good ol' days," you won't be happy here.

    Advice to Management

Reconsider nickel-and-dime level changes to policies that wind up costing you employee engagement. That engagement is the fuel we need for revenue growth.
