I have been working at Marathon Oil full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

There are a lot of nice people there, and benefits are good.

    Cons

The land department has become completely dysfunctional due to leadership changes in 2018/2019. No one should accept a job in MRO land without looking at the land threads on The Lay-off.

    Advice to Management

Show some respect for the land department - land needs to be led by a VP or Director with a land background.

I worked at Marathon Oil full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Starting salary for entry level is high for the industry. Benefits are also good. Work life balance is very good. There are a lot of company events.

    Cons

Marathon's OKC office tried to act like a small company inside a big company, but in reality it was a corporate swamp filled with good ole boys. Their pace is very relaxed, so much so that you'll be pretty bored working there. The place is a revolving door of stagnation and little motivation. Management gave a lot of people first time supervisor jobs (probably because there was nobody else) and it really showed. My first supervisor was a really nice, relate-able guy, but never challenged me in any way despite my extensive experience. He wound up getting demoted to supervising just one area and not the my group. The second supervisor was the biggest micromanager and would literally time how long I would talk to my coworkers, was very passive aggressive, and even made a girl cry. Despite the entire department grouping together to complain about this supervisor, the manager decided to do nothing about it. Only after everybody, except one person, quit did they decide maybe this guy wasn't best for managing people.

Their review system also pits you in a competition with the entire company which, despite working your butt off, will inevitably place you in the bottom 3rd or fourth quartile. How you are rated is a black box where your supervisor supposedly, talks you up to management, who has no idea who you are and what you do, and they say yes or no. Naturally, after working here a while, people catch on to the fact that their work isn't appreciated and either become unmotivated or find another job. While I was at marathon, the average tenure was 3 years. We had a whiteboard where we would put the names of people who quit and averaged the amount to about 2 a month. In a field office of 50.

The CEO at Marathon is also an oil lobbyist who is a hard core trump supporter. He told me at a meeting where he visited the OKC office that he considers women a "special interests" group, despite my making less than my male coworker with half of my experience.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to listen to their employees and take them seriously. Fix the performance reviewing system. Value your employees properly so you don't have constant turnover.

    Pros

Great work/life balance! 9/80's and will allow you to move those days around within the month, which is really great and I dont think any O&G company does that in Houston or anywhere else. Or you can choose half-day Fridays

    Cons

I think the pay could be better, just seems like it's below market.

    Advice to Management

I think the new management is headed in the right direction with the entry into the Permian, development our Bakken, divesting non-core assets and adding bolt-on acreage as needed.

    Pros

Good salary and benefits. Good opportunities for training.

    Cons

It's very sad to see what has happened to this company. It's floundering and adrift. There is no value given for experience and performance...unless you're family or willing to stab your co-workers in the back.

    Advice to Management

Lee, this is not a little XOM. You've destroyed this company.

    Pros

Good work life balance, decent pay with good benefits.

    Cons

Happiness at work greatly depends on which department you work for, can be political. Base salary is nice, but bonuses are lacking.

I worked at Marathon Oil full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

9/80 is best ever. Benefits are good, especially retirement with match and cash balance pension.

    Cons

Backstabbing, favoritism, competition rather than collaboration, disregard for safety and compliance with regulations that management decides are not worth following. In my new job, I do not miss the toxic environment, and I do not worry about the things I am expected to do. I learned a lot and owe a lot to Marathon but am fortunate to have moved on now that the industry is picking up again.

    Advice to Management

Take a hard look at the environment within Marathon.
