I worked at Marshall Dennehey Warner Coleman & Goggin full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

New office building, great location, decent benefits.

    Cons

Sweat shop for paralegals. Quantity of billable hours more important than quality work ethic and product. Micromanaged by a billing supervisor daily. Very ridgid and strict environment with no flexibility. Uncomfortable working atmosphere.

    Advice to Management

Appreciate reliable, competent and hard working employees over unreasonable billing requirements.

I worked at Marshall Dennehey Warner Coleman & Goggin full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Large firm conveniences like copy services and support services that allow paralegals to concentrate on their own job. Competitive salary with market in the surrounding area and good benefits.

    Cons

Paralegals are treated like sales clerks vs hard working professionals. Billable hours are more important to the management than the quality of work performed.

    Advice to Management

Appreciate your hard working paralegals vs treating them disrespectful because of a few less billable hours due to sick days or holidays that are a part of an employee’s benefits.

I have been working at Marshall Dennehey Warner Coleman & Goggin

    Pros

Great place to work when your attorneys are helpful -- every practice has its own quirks. Paralegals must go to training once a year which can be helpful. Depending on your supervisor, you can get some great feedback. Great coffee in the break room. Seminars with free lunch. Colleagues are great.

    Cons

Firm is very political. Health benefits are not that great. Salary and raises are not that great -- they will justify not giving you a good raise by telling you the firm did not have a good year. Negotiate a higher salary from the beginning because you definitely will not get high percentage raises no matter how great you are. Be weary, they will start you much less than the region average for your position. They...

I worked at Marshall Dennehey Warner Coleman & Goggin full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Opportunity for good insurance defense work experience working shoulder to shoulder with some very fine, learned attorneys. Acceptable starting salary. Free coffee (all you can drink). On a departmental team basis, the work is enriching and collaborative. Responsibilities are myriad and self-directed generally.

    Cons

Billing expectations for paralegals are rigorous and challenging, on par with associate attorney expectations. Outdated system of monitoring paralegals (and support staff) kills morale. Paralegals are considered professionals only to the extent that they garner billables for the firm. Show More

    Advice to Management

Rethink paralegal roles, expectations and internal rules so that they are more in step with what the paralegal profession is about - a vital extension of a litigator's practice with the training, education, experience and knowledge, who, when properly used can enhance and generate significant income to support the firm in general.

I have been working at Marshall Dennehey Warner Coleman & Goggin

    Pros

Hour lunch break. Relatively easy work. Secretarial staff is paid well.

    Cons

Management is horrible. Support staff is treated infairly by management and attorneys. You are not allowed to leave the floor for any reason. You have to account for every minute. NO employee perks. Paralegals are way underpaid and overworked. Management hires people with low salary in a file clerk position. Then promote them to paralegal on same salary. No raise. Great business/...

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Marshall Dennehey Warner Coleman & Goggin full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Opportunity to gain experience for entry level employees. Not much recognition for the higher experienced senior paralegals.

    Cons

Too much management made it difficult to know who you were to report to for issues, concerns, or simple requests.

    Advice to Management

    Streamline the hierarchy.

I worked at Marshall Dennehey Warner Coleman & Goggin full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

You are exposed to various different types of litigation.

    Cons

Overworked. Too much pressure on reaching your billing goals. Paralegals get lost in the shuffle not knowing where to fit them in; they are not treated like a professional. Paralegal Manager has very little understanding of what a paralegal does and manages by using the an employee's fear of lossing their job to her advantage. Management is more concerned with billable...

    Pros

Helpful staff. Central location to public transit.

    Cons

Regimented administration. Too many chiefs and not enough Indians. Paralegals worked to the bone and paid far below standard. Attorneys overworked. Revolving door mentality of personnel.

    Advice to Management

Increase paralegal salary base to market standard. Decrease staff and paralegal work week to 35 hours to balance work-life.
