I have been working at MasterCard Foundation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Nice offices and amazingly talented staff.

    Cons

This place is a one woman show. The CEO and a handful of managers make all the decisions. The talents of amazing staff are wasted. You feel like you are wasting the best years of your career working here. Good work is rarely recongized.

    Advice to Management

    Delegate and appreciate your staff.

I have been working at MasterCard Foundation (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    -Opportunities for learning where relevant
-Often in the room with leaders in the field; good exposure to expert networks
-Flexible around schedules as long as filling core hours

    Cons

-There is very little room for growth unless you have been there for years (and years) and have made the right internal connections.
-Misalignments around title and compensation amongst employees
-Poorly performing HR dept that is not accountable to delivering on their responsibilities and promises to staff; no recourse
-Managers tend to be driven for their own purposes/projects/growth, rather than in support of their staff; nearly impossible to find a champion
-No clarity of job, tasks, and responsibilities. Often made to just do busy work- org thrives on consultants
-Undergoing change for nearly 2 years now; this is being poorly managed from the top down.

    Advice to Management

Get it together; recognize employees; think equitably; stop creating new positions at the top and spread the opportunities around.

I worked at MasterCard Foundation full-time

    Pros

young people, building close to downtown, pay is okay, good work in Africa

    Cons

management needs to get their stuff together, no respect for lower employees, frequent over working, other staff that have higher ranking positions think they have control over those at the bottom (interns, assistants, associates), contractors are not treated the same as employers

    Advice to Management

listen to those who actually have good advice to give, takes weeks to speak to someone higher up, provide better career movement, fix HR!

I have been working at MasterCard Foundation full-time

    Pros

Has built an incredible portfolio of strong partners in Africa. The first decade of its work was exemplary and it made a really good name for itself, built a strong brand and accomplished a lot with its partners. Employees were proud to say they worked for the Foundation.

    Cons

The CEO does not have the skills or capacity to take the Foundation further at this point. Good leaders should recognize that they have accomplished a lot, but need to move on to allow someone else to breathe fresh air and energy into the organization and its work. Management are in it for themselves at this point. There is no mentality to build people up, but only themselves and they lack significant skills in strategy development, which is what the Foundation needs right now.

Staff are extremely unhappy, overworked and underpaid. HR is weak and unable to support the Foundation and its staff in this time of change. There are a lot of empty promises and talk of transparency but no follow through and staff are constantly in the dark about significant changes.

    Advice to Management

The Board should really re-evaluate the CEO and her management team. It shows weakness on the Board that they cannot see the downward spiral the Foundation is in right now.

    Pros

Some of the most brilliant people you'll ever work with
Purposeful work. The organization is thoughtful in the way it develops its strategy and how it's going to make an impact
Good leadership who you can learn a tremendous amount from

    Cons

Not enough staff members for the amount of ambition it has
Its still a relatively new Foundation and is still working on policies and procedures which can cause disengagement of staff.

    Advice to Management

Keep investing and motivating your staff - they are your greatest asset.

I worked at MasterCard Foundation full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The staff are great: smart, experienced, dedicated, and fun. Some senior managers are enlightened. The programming makes a difference.

    Cons

Hours are long, flex time is non-existent, and working from home is frowned upon. The office is a cubicle farm. There are no job descriptions, no wage scales, and no advancement scheme. Staff development opportunities are minimal. Travel is extensive, and is in coach class only, irrespective of distance or duration. There is no policy regarding days off in return for weekends spent working and travelling. Vacation time is stingy at 3 weeks. Program staff spend a disproportionate amount of their time preparing materials for Board meetings rather than developing programs and supporting partner organizations. Budget constraints are killing this organization and driving away good staff. Management maintains overhead at an absurdly low level compared to similar foundations.

I worked at MasterCard Foundation as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Peers are supportive. There is a degree of camaraderie.

    Cons

Human resource policies and systems are not developed. There is extensive dissatisfaction among employees but there is a general lack of sensitivity towards this at the leadership level. There is internal re-construction going on for the last year which inconvenienced many people, resulting in excessive noise and dust but the senior management does not want to leave.
