Limited career opportunities and low comp package

      Pros

Work alongside talented traders. Very flexible and opportunistic organization with a flat hierarchy. Good office location. Good work/life balance.

      Cons

A cutthroat environment with limited career development opportunities. Salaries and comp package well below market rate with no/limited progression (especially if you are not a trader). Anyone else working outside core trading business is a second-class citizen.

      Pros

Some departments have a good work/life balance.

      Cons

Middle office works long hours. Operations management is completely clueless. They are very position oriented and have a chip on their shoulder and consistently talk about their positions. When you're start working for the company, you realize, operations management has very little knowledge. Some of the processes that are being done are very manual. There is absolutely no training for analysts on the system. Compensation and bonuses are non existent. You have to fight for an increase every year and even then it's a struggle. Very cheap when it comes to paying employees a decent salary or bonus. Part of the reason why there are a lot of incompetent managers.

      Pros

Casual dress every day and you will not find better insurance benefits for yourself and all dependents.

      Cons

No raises so try to negotiate as much salary as possible up front without the expectation it will increase more in the next couple years. Do not count on a bonus either unless you are in the front office. During my time at Mercuria I saw many people laid off without a clear indication as to why, and some of those were with the company a year or less. Also, it is almost unheard of for people to move around departments so expect to spend 3 or so years in the role you initially accept. As for work-life balance, this really depends on which department you are in, but don't count on it. Many people work weekends and late nights. Even after working 80+ hour work weeks, and being a high contributor to your department, do not expect to be compensated for that performance in the form of a bonus.

Quite good but their compensation packages are subpar and there are no clear lines of authority.

      Incompetent upper management.

      Pros

Laid back culture in terms of dress, and can learn many different aspects of the business outside of your stated department.

      Cons

Run by arrogant, greedy, incompetent managers, with no concept of how to operate a business without trying to cut all corners. Unless you are a productive trader, work-life balance is non-existent. If you are in the US, you will face a never ending uphill battle to get anything productive accomplished. In the back office, you will always be paid less than the market minimum, and face constant obstacles to get the job done. They will lie to you about bonuses just to hire, and will always look for a reason not to give raises, and not honor contracts.
