I worked at Monroe Community College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Wonderful group of people, free housing, great leadership experience

    Cons

There has been really no cons. They key is just to balance the work schedule with the classes.

I worked at Monroe Community College full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Free housing and utilities, tuition reimbursement, professional development funds, great benefits

    Cons

Overwork their employees. You are getting paid for 40 hours/week but you'll be working 50 hours. They do not have enough staff for the size of the campus. RDs are on-call for emergencies 25% of the time. You'll regularly work nights, weekends, and holidays. You will often be up until 5am dealing with resident problems, fights, parties, medical emergencies, and suicidal residents. You will not be properly trained to handle these incidents. Sexual harassment is not taken seriously.

    Advice to Management

Fire everyone. Start over. Hire more staff (at least 7 RDs).

I have been working at Monroe Community College full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Most of the pros are now gone. Once was a flexible, nimble, caring institution.

    Cons

Severe and unnecessary changes so that the current president controls everything. She's hired yes men and women to do what she wants. This has led to a disastrous decline in enrollment.

    Advice to Management

    Fire Kress

I have been working at Monroe Community College part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Many students are some of the finest people on the planet. Many are hard-working and dedicated to improving their lives.

    Cons

The decline in enrollment and negative changes under the current administration have made the atmosphere more negative than it has historically been.

    Advice to Management

Stop fighting with the faculty and staff. Stop micromanaging. Re-emphasize MCC as the first two years of a bachelor's degree. Recognize that the limiting factor for many programs is inadequate math and work on improving their math skills rather than cramming them into programs for which they are unqualified.

    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at Monroe Community College full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    You really make a difference.

    Cons

There's still plenty of implicit bias at MCC and therefore sexism and racism in the workplace.

    Advice to Management

There are women in senior leadership positions but the old boys' network is still in place. MCC has a long way to go in fostering a respectful workplace climate. People who should be held accountable aren't.

    Pros

Retirement is excellent, as well as vacation days and the staff that you work with.

    Cons

Lots of pressure from top down when the issues attempting to be fixed are not completely understood.

I have been working at Monroe Community College part-time

    Pros

The benefits were amazing. Also loved the having the autonomy and opportunity to teach in creative ways and interacting with students.

    Cons

The politics are insane. Also absolutely horrible department chair who condones illegal and unethical student behaviors for the sake of retention rates.

    Advice to Management

MCC needs to get back to the way it used to be when President Flynn was there. The education was of the highest quality. Now it is just a community college where all the administration cares about is retention rates and graduating students who cannot write or spell. It is very sad.
