I worked at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Working on some of the coolest projects with some of the brightest minds in the industry.

    Cons

Too Bureaucratic. Too many obstacles to innovations.

    Advice to Management

Have to change the culture from command and control of the past regime to an innovative approach of today.

I worked at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory full-time

    Pros

Many different and unique positions at the lab. For unmanned spaceflight it is still the best place to work.

    Cons

The Lab has become bogged down in Bureaucracy and has very little interest in supporting it's research and development wings. there are fewer scientists there every year and more managers.

    Advice to Management

Cut the dead weight at the top of the organization. Invest in basic research and science. Move back into actually building spacecraft instead of just managing them.

I worked at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory for more than 5 years

    Pros

JPL offers the allure of working on spacecraft, instruments, and science related to planetary exploration. A lot of talented, curious individuals work there in many different fields. There is an academic atmosphere and lectures are offered on many different topics by people from Caltech, NASA, and other companies. You can work on a variety of projects including flight software, hardware, research, formulation, system...

    Cons

Because JPL is a non-profit government subcontractor, they fundamentally lack the budgets to offer meaningful performance incentives. Wages are low and grow extremely slowly (2%/yr), benefits get pared back each year. This also means that advancement opportunities are not there for all the deserving people they have and get doled out to a select few based on closed-door meetings - often not the most talented but the best-perceived....

    Advice to Management

Increase transparency about what it takes to quality for raises and promotions, offer meaningful career development that is more than just an exercise, commit to diversity in line management and promote women to the highest ranks. Provide a "safety net" for people between projects so people don't have to use their vacation to cover a gap. Also, give training to cut down on abuse, including harassment of people who...

I have been working at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Full of highly educated and smart people with exiting projects. A few businesses near by offer offer 10% discount to JPL employee.

    Cons

Not really a con, if you come in late to work, the parking structure will get full and you will get a good exercise by a 15 minutes walk from the parking lot.

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The campus is very nice. The working hours are flexible. The benefits are average but can be compatible with the private industry. It is best to negotiate the top salary as starting.

    Cons

The technology in most system is old, especially when the lab starts using the old design to save money for future projects. Management is awful with the old boy network, and many are incompetent.

    Advice to Management

Thanks to new the NASA travel policy and system. NASA headquarter now makes the final decision. No more wasteful money is paid to managers who control the charge accounting number to travel unnecessarily and who used to make themselves the gatekeepers.

I have been working at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Extraordinarily capable people. Friendly, collegial work atmosphere among peers. Work that is literally not done anywhere else in the world.

    Cons

Career advancement can be difficult. Securing funding and programmatic considerations are far more important to the organization than technical contributions. Salary compression starts right after hiring: i.e. initial offer may be competitive with industry but raises are small across the board from that point on.

    Advice to Management

Senior management relies on the uniqueness of the work done at JPL to keep employees who would otherwise be capable of finding more lucrative employment elsewhere. This only goes so far and, I have seen bleed-off of very talented people who could have been retained with a little more consideration for their technical contributions.

I have been working at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory

    Pros

    1) Every other Friday off, 2) insurance and 403(B) benefits are good, 3) Projects are exciting and interesting and not focused on profits.

    Cons

    1) Bureaucracy of working at NASA is silly, frustrated and confusing, 2) Very little chance to advance or get promoted.
