I worked at National Grid (UK) full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Some very gritty problems to crunch. Excellent safety culture. A good career choice for those who can work internal politics.

    Cons

They don’t really care about their staff – they are just employees. No emotional intelligence in the management chain nor any real management skills - they appointed for their ability to follow and toe the line, not for leadership skills. Expect to be driven hard but with the brakes firmly on.

    Advice to Management

Delegate power and authority. Start really caring about your staff, their dreams, ambitions and needs. Get some proper professional managers in instead of over-promoting the goody-two-shoes and weasels.
