I worked at NetApp full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Good base compensation. There is a bonus pool based on company achievement to targets, and employee share is based on rating for the year. Most recently, the stock price has done well as the new CEO appears to have stabilized the company's trajectory. NetApp will likely continue to remain one of the few independent storage companies left standing given its market valuation and strong IP portfolio.

    Cons

Enterprise HW/SW companies have gone through tremendous turmoil in the last decade. Not surprisingly, NetApp reversed a lot of the old tenets, such as avoiding layoffs. With a new CEO, there were layoffs twice a year while I was there--which had a bad impact on the morale of the remaining employees.

    Advice to Management

You can't cut your way to growth. The cost cutting appears to have stopped, and the strategy of finding a way to live in an increasingly cloud provider has at least allowed you to retain existing customers. Now is the time for innovation beyond ONTAP as a SW offering.

I worked at NetApp full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Compensation and benefits are good. Lots of work flexibility in terms of work from home or office and when you come-and-go. Pockets of genuinely nice- and smart people but, alas, that population seems to be declining.

    Cons

I was there for a number of years and company has become much more political over that time. Senior executives very much focused on their BU fiefdoms and careers more than helping NetApp succeed as a whole. Culture of inclusive-, consensus management has degraded into something worthless: lots of discussion and passive-aggressive behavior with slow- or timid decision-making. Company can't seem to place bold bets to...

    Advice to Management

Cloud business unit is trying to help pivot the company but company is still too focused on "storage" services that may not be sufficiently attractive to cloud buyers for long. Need more bold-, decisive moves into "data management" services rather than "storage management" to enable more enduring growth but not seeing that happen.

I have been working at NetApp full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Flexible schedule, good benefits, some really nice people. Easy to park, good cafeteria. Some buildings are being brought to Modern days. Free coffee.

    Cons

Continued revolving door of VPs and executives is a non-stop. Tight circles at the top of people who don't agree. Lack of enterprise operations models. Innovation is completely slow and un-funded.

  10. "A company "more or less" succeeding with transformation"

I have been working at NetApp full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Strong Corporate and Geo leadership, product portfolio, culture. Accelerating business model change with increased focussed on cloud, consumption, managed services. Great people and opportunities to grow with the business.

    Cons

Still too many dinosaurs in Sunnyvale that are US centric and not connected enough with the global business. The desire to transform fast often means that speed to deliver becomes the primary focus without a full appreciation of the mid to long term needs of the business or taking full advantage of option that could deliver significantly more ROI for the business e.g. business process and systems modernisation.

    Advice to Management

Continue to be more global in your outlook. Break the US-centric siloes and continue to put talent who really know the business from a global perspective in key positions.
