I worked at Ocean Spray full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Beautiful Lakeville campus Half day Fridays in the summer ( at corporate) Good benefits

    Cons

Poor communication - every meeting talks about open and honest communication but that never truly happens. Bad low level management - bad lower level management and when you go to HR about the issues you get no where. No advancements - as much as upper management and HR talk about all of the amazing opportunity to advance your career, it never happens, if you do not have an MBA you will go no where and be in a dead end job.

Thank you for sharing your view. It can be hard when folks, especially in a supervisory position, are not fully engaged in a company’s transformation—culturally we are working to change that and appreciate your honesty. Communication is not just “for show.” It is a foundational element of how we operate: with honesty, with transparency and with many opportunities to have dialogue with each other and with leadership—forums, engagement surveys, department meetings, technology advancements and more. Staying connected and engaged is how we stay on strategy and on a successful path. Success also takes talent—creating “bench strength” is a must for any company, and a top priority for Ocean Spray that we achieve through a variety of career development programs and opportunities.

I worked at Ocean Spray full-time for more than a year

    Pros

There is nothing positive left anymore.

    Cons

Most things about the direction and the way upper management caries themselves are sad. Tough to see so many unjust lay offs.

    Ocean Spray Response

    August 2, 2019Corporate Communications Leader

In July, Ocean Spray announced the final phase of its tech-led transformation, which will modernize our business and make it more flexible, as well as create more meaningful and strategic roles to deliver on our goals and growth strategy. Unfortunately, with that change, some of our colleagues will be transitioning out of our cooperative. We recognize the range of emotions this announcement caused, as demonstrated by these recent posts. We are confident this is the right business decision, both for our Farmer-Owners and for the health and growth of the business. Our goal has and will remain to treat any impacted colleagues with respect, provide them with assistance and transitional benefits, and also take care of our team as we move forward together. Our business strategy is working, we delivered on our commitments this year, and we are proud of the accomplishments all of our have colleagues worked so hard for. We remain excited and ready for the future.

I worked at Ocean Spray full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Working for a cooperative makes you feel close to the purpose of the company. You really believe in the power of the cranberry and the possibilities for great products. Good pay and benefits. Beautiful campus with renovated office that makes you want to come to work every day. Plenty of opportunities to make your mark on the company and impress Senior Leaders. Great people who are always willing to help out and teach you new skills.

    Cons

Strong headwinds against sugar make the future concerning, despite numerous attempts at improving the image of the cranberry. An "old boys club" mentality pervades, especially from upper management and Ocean Spray lifers, with very few women among senior leadership. The company culture is too old school and lacks transparency, and things like flexible work policies and work-life balance are far behind similar CPG companies and unevenly enforced based on managers' preferences. Overworking employees is the norm. Bad behavior is tolerated as long as people are achieving their goals, and screaming matches during meetings are not uncommon. If the business is struggling, there is no money to support normal business needs or support products, making it even more challenging to keep the business afloat. Poor systems and databases make finding and passing along information time consuming and frustrating.

    Ocean Spray Response

    January 25, 2019Talent Acquisition Coordinator

Ocean Spray values honesty and transparency as integral parts of our culture: thank you for taking the time to voice your opinion. We’re glad to hear you learned how mighty the cranberry is and that you enjoyed your Ocean Spray family during your time with us. We also thank you for the concerns you described and welcome the opportunity to discuss these with you in person. We don’t believe your words correctly portray our culture, and a majority your statements are misleading. Upward mobility for females at our company is a key focus, and we are proud of our success and recent track record. As announced company-wide, we just hired a female of color to our senior management team. She joins two other women on our senior management team (and 59 other women promoted in HQ just this year) who work closely with our Board of Directors—a variety of men and women who represent our 700 family farms! Technologically speaking, we have brought on a brand-new CIO who is leading Ocean Spray through a digital transformation. We are also actively recruiting a diversity & inclusion position to continue driving the importance of diversity at Ocean Spray, a value near and dear to our heart and necessary for our success. Finally, we’ve launched a recurring engagement survey to hear from our Ocean Spray family often and be able to make changes and deliver results toward professional development. We believe the strongest teams include different values and outlooks with seamless communication, allowing for healthy conversations that lead to best practices and outcomes. We look forward to hearing from you.

I have been working at Ocean Spray full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good hourly employees to work with.

    Cons

Difficult upper management and management philosophies. Management is constantly looking for ways to cut employees and transfer job duties to existing employees or to salaried non union mangement employees. Work is also constantly contracted out.

I worked at Ocean Spray full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

There are many great people in the middle management levels of the organization that are very caring and supportive, and just generally great to work with. Ocean Spray has a great brand. They will be a good company and employer again at some point.

    Cons

Pay is OK depending on the level and salary you are hired in at - their overall compensation philosophy seems to be to pay as little as possible for a given job. They have salary ranges for each position, but many are paid below the bottom of the band. I wouldn't recommend this as a place for a young person to develop. There isn't much of a developmental culture here and people generally sit in jobs for a long time which makes career progression somewhat difficult. Not a bad place for someone later in their career though. Work life balance is OK. There is some flexibility which is nice, but lots of evening and weekend work. It is not uncommon to get a short lead time request on a Saturday or Sunday. Upper management and the culture they have created is the real problem here, and the reason I would recommend staying away until the C-level managers turn over. There is a culture of frequent verbal abuse and all decisions must go through Top management. Employees are not empowered to make decisions and must frequently placate upper management.

    Pros

some good people who want to do a great job

    Cons

silo'd departments, tactical (poor) middle management, task-oriented risk adverse workers, upper management who are sub-par in leading and make decisions based on opinion, not fact.
