"Look elsewhere if you are a software engineer"

I worked at PA Consulting full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

There are some great people in PA, the problem is a fair few don't stick around for long. Most people are reasonable friendly, although there are a few cliquey groups, they can be avoided (but you might be excluded from their projects). There are also some really exciting projects to work on, so long as you know the right people (or are just lucky) you might end up really enjoying your time at PA (as I did for the majority of my time). PA prides itself on a relatively flat structure, which is partially true, to a point. Some partners are very approachable and friendly, others not so much. Senior management is also not very approachable.

    Cons

Progression is pretty poor for software engineers working in Digital, despite many attempts to change this. Once you reach a certain rank you have to start selling, which is a totally different set of skills than a traditional software engineer. You are also required/expected to contribute to internal projects/bids/etc in addition to your client work. This is the case even if you are fully utilised for a whole year. This compounds with the fact that pay is below market average for engineers, and there is no additional compensation (or even much recognition) for these additional tasks, other than that they are required for promotion. On the subject of promotions, PA promotes itself as a meritocracy however completely blocks promotions if a certain number of years in service has not been reached. Although this rule only seems to have been enforced in the past year or so, as previous years has seen some promotions slip through. The interview process for software engineers is also pretty poor, and it's very inconsistent. It's mostly up to the discretion of a single engineer (there is usually only one interviewer in each session). This means the culture is a mishmash, and skill levels vary wildly.
