Pros

People: every goodbye letter anyone wrote talked about how great 90% of the staff there were. Place: a science center is an interesting cool place to work. Benefits: it's not fair to compare a non-profit-museum no less- to the giant tech corporations in Seattle. Benefits and perks (movies, laser shows, cool events) were decent and far superior to what I have now in a mid-sized for-profit firm. Would recommend to a friend with strong disclaimers (see Cons).

Cons

I left because my expertise was not values; ideas were not taken seriously. Very low pay, just one raise in 5 years (not even cola). Genuine interest in advancing equity issues was not matched by genuine efforts. Expecting to run a large education/entertainment venue like a start-up was admirable but not always practical. Priority was placed on guest satisfaction (public ratings) over staff was de-moralizing.

Pros

Great people, fun mission, interesting job with interesting history, excellent health care benefits and PTO. Newly implemented cost of living raise a nice move.

Cons

Management. Your experience entirely depends on your manager. If you get one of the middle-managers who cares, you'll love it. Otherwise you work under one of the other kinds of middle-managers or almost all of the department heads, and you will have to fight to be able to take that generous PTO and justify sick time off. Many managers have insane expectations but zero time for training/orientation, and upper management preaches one thing but puts policies in place that practice another. Not an employee-focused institution. The salary is low for Seattle, so consider this a good stepping stone but not your forever job.

Pros

the community of people who work here is incredible, committed to their work and overall energetic and supportive, lots of programs to broaden experience, PD&T for salaried staff in house is great, reduced Orca Cards, Sick and Vacation time are separate

Cons

Lack of resources for program development and improvement, more focused on quantity than quality, lack of competitive pay, no 'on boarding period' for new staff expected to jump in with little preparation or exposure to programs, inequitable distribution of resources for departments (financial/material/staffing), teams are overworked, hard to use PTO limited to obscure time frames, expected to be available or reachable on days off
