Steer clear of the GR department
19 Mar 2023 - Government Relations in Washington, DCRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
I actually think outside of this department Pew isn’t a bad place to work. Excellent work/life balance, generous retirement and time off, run of the mill benefits, etc. It has the reputation for a reason this is where you come to either A. Have a baby or B. Go back to get an advanced degree. If you want to work but maybe not terribly hard come here.
Cons
It’s particular but worth noting the GR department might be the most devalued, understaffed, misunderstood, mismanagement, underfunded, and confused department in the entire institution. If you are a global nonprofit and have a GR department fighting for its life to stay relevant something is not adding up. Your mission is to do public good through policy change but virtually every senior level staff of GR was let go or left within the past few months? Riddle me that? How are you going to get anything tangibly accomplished? So many other organizations base their strategies off the advice what is their government relations shop reasonably accepting can be accomplished? But no keep writing all these papers no one will ever read and expect things to change.

Company figuring out its way in "post pandemic" era
25 May 2023 - Officer in Washington, DCRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
great work-life balance, smart and kind colleagues, excellent retirement benefits, impactful work by colleagues who care
Cons
not as stable as i thought it was going to be, very top-down decisions made with little transparency or attention to DEI. leaders say they care but are clearly still in early stages of their understanding and often come off as tone-deaf

Prestigious, but the Process and Bureaucracy Will Drain the Life Out of You
19 Jan 2023 - Manager in Washington, DCRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
- 401(k) match - Leave policy, including medical, dependent care, vacation and sick time - Beautiful, albeit sterile and not very functional, offices - 60% remote/40% in-office hybrid workplace
Cons
- NOTHING happens quickly or efficiently - Everybody and their brother has to review everything and make changes to justify their existence; it makes getting anything done tough - 3x-4x more time spent on process than actually doing the work. - Management is about managing up, never down or watching out for your staff - Raises rarely exceed 3% annually and promotions rarely happen and require “making a business case,” unless you’re a favored staffer, and then you seem to be promoted early and often. - Inequitable salary practices, with employees significantly out-earning more-experienced colleagues - Talk about transparency is exactly that; one of the most byzantine and secretive places I’ve ever worked.

Great org to work at, but minimal room for growth
4 Mar 2023 - Coordinator in Washington, DCRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
- Excellent benefits and PTO - Well-organized institutional infrastructure - Generally positive and healthy workplace with encouragement for work-life balance
Cons
- Raises outside of a yearly cost of living increase are extremely rare - Promotions are also rare. It's well known that to get a higher position at Pew you need to quit and reapply in a few years. Known as the Pewmarang - Poor communication from management can lead to confusion. Both system-wide and manager to direct report

Pros
big name; has money to fund research, ad campaigns, coalitions, and conferences; great 401k match; decent track record on effectively moving (small) policy changes; markets/pitches its work and successes well to media and decision makers
Cons
slow, opaque bureaucracy; very limited growth opportunities; micromanagers everywhere; thinks small; arrives late to the game; bites off less than it can chew; very deep siloes, hard to feel like part of something bigger

Stay for the retirement match
21 Dec 2022 - Director in Washington, DCRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Great office location in D.C. Smart and dedicated colleagues The retirement (plan) and match is one of the best. Budget flexibility Work / life balance + solid vacation days
Cons
Slow to promote. Very much a popularity contest vs merit Limited diversity on board and top management Policy priorities & issue focus are a complete mystery Leadership are older and out of touch w/ reality Beyond left leaning bias in workforce Pay increases along w/ promotions are few
