I have been working at Pfizer full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Ability to make at or above industry norm in salary. Good to be associated with the largest pharmaceutical company in the world

    Cons

The company is so big that it is difficult to advance - too many people for every job opening, and not many openings to begin with. Arrogance from NYC senior management is ridiculous. Also, there is a ton of duplicity in departments and very little focus on communication across groups.

    Advice to Management

    Trim and force communication1

I worked at Pfizer full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Generally good resources available; Pockets of the company are eager to move forward with urgency to discover and develop pharmaceuticals

    Cons

Consensus decision making culture which slows things down; watch your back; Risk tolerance can be unreasonably low; Quality of science is spotty

    Advice to Management

CEO and board are on the right track.

I worked at Pfizer for more than 8 years

    Pros

Pay was better than average, flexible working conditions

    Cons

Business is declining, bias against former acquisitions (Wyeth, pharmacia), no rationale in cuts - lots of dead wood cut, but lots of good people too

    Advice to Management

    Be transparent

I worked at Pfizer full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Large company with established presence in segment Many bright, well educated coworkers Compensation excellent

    Cons

No apparent strategic focus save stock price maintenance Co-workers more concerned with being let go than doing job Too fragmented with little overall strategy to guide efforts Found many people a bit too self-centered in work and weren't too helpful in helping you if it didn't help them

    Advice to Management

Hire back the people that knew what they were doing and turf the sycophants.

I have been working at Pfizer

    Pros

Well-respected, company is moving in the right direction, compensation is very good, really smart people

    Cons

Middle-management competency is variable, opportunities sometimes provided to a manager's inner circle, drive to hire external talent without always regarding experienced employees

    Advice to Management

Ian Read is definitely moving things in the right direction and Pfizer is a company for which I'm proud to work. Competency of middle management needs improvement and while paring down performance review bulkiness is good, I haven't been asked for feedback for my manager through end of year or MEI at all. The Wyeth leadership is typically very good. Those brought in from the outside, however, tend to feel like the inside...

    I worked at Pfizer

    Pros

Comp and benefits were very good - but subject to change Industry tries to make a difference in the world rank and file employees are great to work with many roles have true global exposure

    Cons

can be very political/toxic frequent senior leadership changes in last 10 years businesses under evaluation for sell offs layoffs continuous and more expected

    Advice to Management

Current leadership is looking at seismic change in the company. Employees and morale have been bludgeoned over the last couple of years. Acting with integrity and talking straight to employees would be a tremendous start to bringing the old pride back at Pfizer.

I have been working at Pfizer

    Pros

Knowledgeable colleagues help make the work enviroment bearable, but the type of colleagues one interacts with varies from area to area. Some areas are intensely competitive such as in clinical, where PhDs seem to dislike MDs and work to undermine them. In ohter areas-science driven, the work atmosphere is much better and more positiivve.

    Cons

Criteria for promotions in clinical are kept secret and are applied in unfair ways. There is a prevailing atmosphere of negative politics, competitiveness, and backstabbing in order for one's colleagues to get ahead. Managament decision-making is erratic and inconsistent, leading to a lack of confidence in leadership and the feeling of being adrift.

    Advice to Management

Mamangement needs to get out and listen to colleagues at the lower level. The company is incredibly heirarchical and this stifles innovation and only develops syncophants. Also, 360 degree reviews are sorely needed-this is the only way to improve the leadership. When the higher cares care about making those beneath them then the company will improve.

    I worked at Pfizer

    Pros

Most highly professional group of employees I ever encountered- very highly trained, dedeicated, creative, and aligned.

    Cons

Very large and slow to make important decisions; schism between original Pfizer employees and those who joined though acquisition- Warner Lambert/Pharmacia/Wyeth, with the original Pfizer folks having the inside line on everything.

    Advice to Management

Continue to mix the management teams at all levels form the many companies and cultures that have ben joined together.
