"Riskier (visionary) approaches seem neglected; will key R&D talent flee?"

I have been working at Pfizer

    Pros

Much technical expertise, opportunities to learn and grow, resources (albeit not necessarily enough $ to fund adequately all projects), great benefits.

    Cons

Even though science and innovation are desired, decisions from some senior managers do not appear to be sufficiently science-driven; despite the recent reorganization in smaller business units, scale and complexity remain to be harnessed towards better productivity.

    Advice to Management

The safer & more precedented & predictable approaches cannot be managed the same way than those that are riskier but with higher potential. Current management decisions seem to be removing the incentives to pursue the latter. Brightest R&D talent is looking for opportunities elsewhere.

I have been working at Pfizer

    Pros

There is a lot of very talented people here. It is a shame more people dont realize this. The place is awash with talent and yet everyone is complaining about the challenges we face and how we are all going down a hole. I say with the people this company has we can make it happen. We were aching for change and action and that is what we have and i think it is a good thing. We need to make a positive state of mind prevail....

    Cons

the negativeness right now permeating the company and the fact that in many aspects it is somewhat monolithic and inertial. but there is clear willingness to change.

    Advice to Management

Keep communicating all efforts you are doing to turn this ship around. Keep on driving the focus to what can be achieved. Keep communicating a clear vision of what can be achieved. Give more chance to the great talent you have in house. Get real not only about developing talent but about managing C players.

    I worked at Pfizer

    Pros

Important mission. Mostly ethical management. Some extraordinarily talented people and committed people. Excellent benefits and, depending on where in the company you sit, usually great flexibility with respect to work-life balance. Philanthropically generous.

    Cons

While there are some exrtraordinary colleagues, there is staggering mediocrity hiding within a still-bloated organization. Highly bureaucratic and hierarchical, it can be difficult for innovative and dynamic leaders to find their way. It can be exceedingly difficult to move within the organization across functions or divisions. Neither performance management nor talent planning is done particularly well. Despite the...

    Advice to Management

An overall arrogance still permeates the culture. Kindler and his immediate team of top managers -- who are far better than their predecessors on this score -- need to continue to push this culture down through the organization. Most importantly, stop being a slave to the Street. As I think many knew instinctively, selling the consumer business was a blunder. If the Wyeth deal goes through, think hard about the $2.7...

  4. "If it weren't for the reorganizations, could be a nice place to work. Currently in complete chaos with low morale."

I have been working at Pfizer

    Pros

The development pipeline is good (should PFE choose to develop it), there are many smart, top-notch people and my experience with immediate supervisors and mid-level management has, so far, been positive. The direction towards business units makes sense.

    Cons

Reorganizations are painful to say the least. The company has laid off about 40,000 people since the acquisition of PHA a few years back and the people who have been laid off seem to be selected almost arbitrarily. Implementation of reorganizations seems hare-brained at best and one always wonders what leadership was thinking when they put out communications of how well things are moving along. Morale is at an...

    Advice to Management

The BU transition is the right way to go. Retooling research is painful, but without pipeline productivity, we have to do something different. Buy revenue stream; we need it to survive...that said, a reorg combined with a major acquisition will be the end of Pfizer unless you bolt on and pillage the acquired company quickly.

I have been working at Pfizer

    Pros

From the perspective of anyone who joined in the last 3-4 years, Pfizer is a very employee friendly company from the perspective of salary and benefits and the people are generally nice. If you want an opportunity to have an impact at a big pharmaco, now's the time at Pfizer. The company is forced to accept new ideas and forced to accept change at a rate that it would otherwise resist. So if you want good experience...

    Cons

Employees have been at Pfizer for many years that they cannot help but be discouraged now that the good times are clearly over. There is massive optimization required for survival. This means systems, processes and organizations need to be redesigned, reshaped and shrunk from top to bottom. Additionally, bonuses are no longer going to be guaranteed the way they essentially were in the past, raises are going to be smaller,...

    Advice to Management

Two Recommendations --------------------------------- ONE - Completely redesign how accounting is done. The different accounting divisions are at war with each other because of how our financial processes work. It all rolls up to one CFO eventually, but as every is told to cut their budget, they cut the portions of their budgets that most impact areas outside of their accounting division. The result of this structure...
