I worked at Phillips, Hager, and North full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Opportunities to gain meaningful experience are available if you're prepared to put in the work. Nice parties.

    Cons

Compensation is low. Work hours are high. Benefits are below average - unless you've been employed since before the RBC takeover. Limited opportunities available for advancement or lateral moves. Lots of gossip and cliquey attitudes...

    Advice to Management

Seriously consider culture change, and ensure staff who have merit have opportunities for advancement and feel like they can have a career.

Stop pandering to the bank and bring back some of what made PH&N great as a private firm

I have been working at Phillips, Hager, and North full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

There are some smart people on the investment/client facing side who moved to Vancouver for family reason.

    Cons

There are some old PH&N employees who joined the firm prior to RBC and PH&N merger in 2008, who act as "union members" in the firm. They are not tech savvy and can be disruptive to younger driven people in the firm. There are a lot of office politics and people gossip all the time. It almost feels like a high school The firm doesn't invest much in technology, so you have to do a lot of repetitive manual work. High...

    Advice to Management

The firm should give more opportunities to younger people, and improve the office culture.

I have been working at Phillips, Hager, and North full-time

    Pros

    - Excellent culture - Highly motivated co-workers - Competitive salary - Opportunity for different career tracks through both PHN and RBC

    Cons

    - Becoming more bureaucratic with influence from RBC - RBC limits growth potential (no opportunity for partner) - We are still using Blackberry even though the company no longer supports handsets

    Advice to Management

Maintain the entrepreneurial spirit that made PHN what it is. RBC is the only remaining major organization in North America to still use Blackberry as its primary phone. Why is it that we can't replicate what any of the other big banks or governments have done in transitioning to BYOD or iPhone/Android?

I have been working at Phillips, Hager, and North

    Pros

PH&N has a great culture. It is fun and challenging place to work. There are opportunities for promotion in Vancouver, but also to move to other offices like Toronto and London

    Cons

Base salary growth has been limited in recent years More decisions are being made in Toronto and not locally

    Advice to Management

Maintain the great culture in the Vancouver office. Promote from within.
