Fun but there are downsides

Pros

Pros are that it could be a very fun, face paced environment. The commission pay is very competitive.

Cons

Cons that I have seen so far are that (and this doesn’t apply to every ownership group) they really don’t see you unless you’re bringing in millions. The workload could be ridiculous but it’s still not enough unless you’re selling your butt off.

Pros

Helping members reach their personal business goals. If you do it right (read: don't ask permission) you can buy products at wholesale price for your own home.

Cons

Showroom management set up to create us (sales) vs. them (operations) mentality, that is unnecessary and detrimental. Incredible amounts of work for next to nothing pay. To speak to both of these points, see the disparities between Operations Managers and Sales Managers pay. Both positions are supposed to be equal and operations managers support sales every bit as much as sales managers do. Sales are a nightmare and quite often cutthroat and backstabbing in nature. Just an awful, dramatic, hostile work environment on every level. Head for zee hills and don't ever work here. I did my job, did it well, and left on peaceful terms but I will forever look at this business as the way in which NOT to motivate, the example as to what happens when ethics are tossed out the window, and how a complete lack of corporate responsibility will snuff out a business in the 21st century.

Pros

Good vendor support with samples and updates.

Cons

Management has just begun to sell cabinets and does not understand how to manage the cabinet department. You are left on your own to make it without any support. Cut throat sales environment with the Account Manager's stealing sales and withholding information about a client in the showroom there to see the Kitchen Designer and hand you the information after the client has left the building. Account Managers are the first point of contact for clients looking to buy cabinets and the problem is that the A/M's are really not trained in understanding clients needs or budgets and recommend the wrong products for their budget. You'll be lucky if you ever get a budget from an A/M. Very long hours, be prepared to design twice because the initial information was not provided properly to the Kitchen and Bath Designer. No admin support. Your work day will flood into your evenings and weekends to keep on top of it. Full schedule of in-home measures for members (contractors and designers) and be prepared to give away the design prior to a sale.
