      Good company, nice staff

      Pros

      - Fun wellness initiatives - Sr. Management cares about employees... CEO and COO often check in with staff, ask about personal life, even offer to do things outside of the office - Decent technology in HQ (lenovo laptops, new monitors, sit-to-stand desks). If you need it and it's relevant for your job, they'll buy it for you. Never had a problem getting new technology or an item I wanted. - Good benefits (healthcare, dental, vision, 401k, etc.) - Good PTO (start on 15 + 2 floating holidays + the basic federal holidays) and increases as your time increases - New office is modern & in nice building - On a whole, everyone wants you to do better - there's plenty of encouragement - When asked, leadership is happy to sit down with you and chat about professional ambitions and lessons learned on projects in order to promote professional development -Good collaboration between coworkers

      Cons

      - Lack of ability to work remote when needed - Open plan office can still be fairly distracting in afternoon (but it's also a sign we like to collaborate and chat with each other) - While there's plenty of conference rooms, the booking system still seems to be ignored by some staff members

Excellent idea about being more deliberate about mentoring. We recognize the value mentoring provides in career development. Collaboration is a key attribute of the culture at SMA. We found that the open office architecture and having people in the same office and conference rooms is important to enhancing our agility and flexibility. There are some advantages to working remotely, but they are not nearly as impactful as getting people out of their technical bubbles and promoting collaboration. co-locating also provides each of us direct access to support that can minimize the impact of “crunch time”.

IT and Technology: We did have an aging technology stack that was limiting to the firm. In August 2018, we completed our transition of our entire technology infrastructure to the cloud. We do have some tools running on our cloud servers that will be updated or replaced over the next twelve months. We recognize that to differentiate, we need to continue to evolve and enhance our technology stack. Working from home: We discourage working from home because it inhibits collaboration. Since we brought everyone back into the office, we have seen a significant improvement in communication, collaboration, and productivity. This is not possible when everyone is working from home. When a unique temporary family issues occurs, we have allowed people to work from home on a temporary basis, but our objective is to have the team collocated in an office. Leadership: We have a large diverse group of people. It is not always possible to always address everyone's needs, but we do try and do consider the impact of decisions on each person. We would like to understand the issues and work with you to resolve them. If there are specific issues you would like to discuss, please reach out to Maureen in HR or to me directly. Micro manager: Everyone has a leadership style and contribution style. Communication about assignments is one of the best ways ensure everyone is aware of your progress. Communication: We work hard to keep the team informed. We recognize we cannot over communicate. If there is information you do not have or have specific examples, please let us know. We are willing to share, and we are working to continually enhance the cadence and content of communication. Open office environment: The open environment does take time to assimilate and at times can be distracting. With the move to the new office, we have more conference rooms and huddle rooms. We encourage staff to utilize these when you need to focus on a technical task. We are interested in your feedback. If you would like to discuss any issue in more detail, please contact me or Maureen. Jacque Keats COO
