I have been working at Saint-Gobain full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    1. Work life balance & brand name. 2. Product based company so it's margins are not as severely impacted as IT services companies have been in recent years. In fact, the group shows consistent growth & has been undergoing a reorganization recently to become more agile, modern & streamlined. 3. Salary is on time. 4. Good benefits and insurance coverage. 5. Flexible working hours with laptop provided. 6. Ability to... work from home. 7. Plenty of leaves that can be availed. 8. Generally good, caring people and a relaxed atmosphere most of the time. 9. Casual wear on Thursdays and Fridays. Free snacks are provided every evening (although it's seldom very good quality...) 10. Multi cultural and diverse work environment.

    Cons

    1. Unclear role & responsibilities so you may be piled on with more than you bargained for as a technical expert/Consultant. There seems to be a lack of clear technical expertise, design, architecture or reference assets etc. 2. Strictly enforced work timings of minimum 8 hours per day and 45 hours per week - even if you've completed all your tasks (though it is left to you too decide how you would prefer to manage... your schedule). 3. Slow growth without clear visibility of upcoming projects etc. 4. High attrition rate and general disengagement/dissatisfaction among employees. 5. Management and decision making abilities are focused into the hands of a select few employees & no projects are likely to get off the ground without a buy in from on-site counterparts in France/Europe/UK/USA etc. 6. They have a bogus travel agreement policy even for experienced professionals to enforce service in the organization the first time that you may be given the opportunity to travel abroad (for 1-2 weeks you are expected to stay committed to the company for 1 year or even longer if the duration of your stay is slightly extended). They say it is for work & to establish trust but trust is a two way street and that needs to go both ways in the employer-employee relationship. 7. Cost cutting & penny pinching is visible at every corner. 8. Lots of bureaucratic red tape and hoops to jump through to sometimes get simple things done which can lead to frustration. 9. Sandwich rule applies to holidays. 10. On roll employees are treated a lot differently than off roll vendor based consultants/professionals.
