    I worked at Shoe Zone for more than a year

    Pros

    Some of the people that you meet are genuinely lovely people. If you work in a store with good management and staff it's a great part-time job, it's hard work but with a system in place it is quite laid back and enjoyable.

    Cons

    There is very strict budgeting and they get the most out of all of the few staff they employ which means that you're working short hours and expected to do an unreasonable amount of work most of the time, especially if you have lazy staff/management. Discrimination against disabilities, if you have an issue with members of staff no action is in place to cater to your needs. Very poor pay, minimum wage and minimal hours is unrealistic for anybody looking for a remotely sustainable income. There is very little room for promotion within the company. In my personal experience, I worked there for years and dedicated many hours to my store. My experience got worse over time due to poor management and discrimination of my disabilities. The work that I was expected to do was impossible for the time that was set and so I worked countless hours of unpaid overtime to get it done so that I wouldn't be punished. There is a lot of pressure to get things done, I skipped my breaks for days at a time to ensure that I would finish on time.

    Pros

    25% Staff Discount, Christmas Bonus, Christmas Party, uniform is provided, work shoes are now free (whereas before you had to pay for them using your discount) and now £8 is paid towards work trousers (depending on job title, example: I'm a part-time Sales Assistant so I get £8 once a year towards work trousers). At the store I USED TO work in (before it closed down), the store I CURRENTLY work in and another store I have twice COVERED FOR on a Sunday (so that's three separate, local stores) all the staff are absolutely amazing! So, so friendly and upbeat. We banter all the time and they feel like extended family. Who knew you could have such a laugh at work eh? The job itself is mostly very basic and easy, however the frequent moves, finding somewhere to put new lines and filling in empty gaps on shelves when there's not enough stock to do it with can be a bit challenging! :P Add the customers on top and you've got yourself a retail job. Even so, I can't imagine working anywhere else. I just love it.

    Get to work with colleagues in the Retail Industry. Learn how to work paid for in a the Stock Room in the Retail Industry. Learn how to overcome obstacles working on the shop floor be it stacking items helping customers or serving customers.

    Cons

    Not enough training was handed over to me to complete the probationary period. We needed more full-time employees compared to part-time ones. I was mis-led or mis-treated.

    The pay is poor if you are only working part time and it does not offer much of a challenge or an opportunity to progress.You easily get bored while working.

    Pros

    Great people to work with on shop floor level, however this is obviously differs on each store.

    Cons

    - Extreme amounts of manual lifting at times, especially when there was a delivery. - Went through two shop refits during my time with the company, the amount you are paid with the amount of physical work is ridiculous and not worth it. This involved an awful lot of heavy lifting and moving. - It's very demoralising to see the CEO bragging in the bi-monthly circular which charity event/fun run/cycle event etc he has been doing whilst the rest of the staff have been slaving away for him! - Extremely abyssmal pay and constant cutting of hours. I was on £3.48 when I was 16, £4.05 when I was 17 and around the time I left at 19/20 I was on £4.95 (only because the minimum wage increased!). Most work apart from Store Manager is on a part-time basis. Assistant Managers only earn ~£6 an hour and are expected to take on the responsibilities of the Store Manager if needed. Pay does not reflect the responsibilities you have. - Store Managers earn £12-15k which an extremely basic wage for most entry level jobs in other areas. - Area Managers regularly encourage Store Managers to keep on cutting hours. - Hard to pretend to have an interest in shoes which not only look awful, but are extremely poorly made. Shoes are regularly returned because they have broken after less than a week after purchase. - You are often left on your own. This happens especially at lunch time. It can be borderline impossible to try and keep the shop tidy, attending to customers who need help, serving on the till and also keeping an eye on people in the shop to ensure nothing is stolen as there is no CCTV or shop alarms as they are fake. - Store Managers do not really have any power to make any decisions, everything is referred to Head Office. - Profit is the only thing that matter from Area Manager level and above. Consideration for other people does not factor at all. Extremely poor attitude from Area Managers as well and not aware of the circumstances and environment you have to work in. Senior Management expect for the store to become your life and don't realise that for most employees it is simply a job and not a way of life. - Extremely poor career opportunities. - Employee benefits are laughable - 25% off shoes that cost £2.99 anyway. - No formal training was provided apart from using the till and stock replenishment. - Shop gets extremely hot and stuffy in the Spring/Summer months which customers have also complained about. We were told by the Area Manager we did not 'deserve' air conditioning because we are not a big enough store. We also were not allowed to have a fan on the till incase children trap their fingers in it. We could only have a small vertical fan which would fan our legs, which would be no use when it was our face that was sweating and needed fanning.
