I worked at Sky full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I worked at Osterley Park which hosts a relatively large number of technical teams, although many have moved to Leeds.

There are some exceptionally talented technical people around from which you can learn a lot. Some of them also use a large number of different technologies, so again lots of skills to pick up. I believe that Sky is also more agile than more of the companies similar in size which are out there.

    Cons

Management of projects is not great. Projects which have been in development for weeks or even months might not make it to production straight away. There's also loads of context switching with different projects being paused and resumed at the same time in the same team. This can make it frustrating at times.

I worked at Sky full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Everything - they seriously invest in staff, even the most junior employee gets free Sky TV and Broadband products (full range worth c£2,000 per annum) plus private medical benefits, brilliant food in the canteens heavily subsidised (a meal that would cost you £25 in Pizza Express costs you £5 in one of there many excellent cafes/restaurants on campus)

    Cons

Osterley campus is a bit off the beaten track

    Advice to Management

Keep investing in staff - it pays dividends (as latest results would suggest!)

I have been working at Sky full-time

    Pros

Everyone is really friendly and positive. Flexible working hours. Games areas (pool tables, table tennis) so you can take a break from work. Kitchen areas on every floor with free tea, coffee and hot chocolate plus fridge and microwave facilities. Lots of recycling bins for paper, plastics, tins, food waste etc. Very accessible buildings and wheelchair friendly, seen a few wheelchair users moving about the buildings with ease, and using the Stannah wheelchair lift. Level access to all buildings. Shower facilities. Staff work in small teams despite working in large areas with lots of desks/people. Not too noisy, but headphones welcome for those wanting more peace. Cafe in building 2. Good local facilities nearby - Tesco Express, North Star coffee shop, Dock 29 pub, Pizza Express. About 15 mins walk from train station, with regular buses as an alternative.

    Cons

Parking is very expensive in the nearby multi-storey car park (appreciate nothing to do with Sky), on street parking limited to 2 hours, or 4 hours in disabled bay (again, nothing to do with Sky). Not ideal parking options for those who need to use their car to get to work, though, but then most city centre offices will have this issue. Also seems a fair walk from disabled parking bay to the Sky buildings so people with reduced mobility may find this tricky unless they have a wheelchair/scooter. Sometimes the main entrance buzzer facility to reception doesn’t seem to work for visitors.

    Pros

Good atmosphere. They care about employees and ask you what you think could be improved then they go away and see if it's possible.

    Cons

Working shifts could be a con if you are someone who wants a 9 to 5, Monday to Friday job.

I have been working at Sky full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Joined Sky on a graduate Software Engineering Academy program. Best start to a career that I could have hoped for. Great projects, opportunities to learn, amazing campus, awesome industry leading benefits. So many reasons to join.

    Cons

Size of projects can lead to agile practices followed within a waterfall style delivery. Architects dictate design a bit too much with only a bit of feedback taken on board from devs.

    Advice to Management

Empower design decisions from developers more and deliver small features earlier. We don’t need the entire product to see how/if ideas will work.
