"Getting lost with optics and political correctness. Stale with little actions."

I have been working at Sonos

    Pros

Flexible hours, good products, loyal customer base.

    Cons

Little to no upward mobility or growth opportunity, but it is disguised as a ‘flat’ structure as if that is a good thing without any credible explanation. It’s even ironic as there’s a long and clear org leveling that defines the hierarchy, base salary and bonus as well. Sonos has recently changed the review scale to be even flatter, and that clearly makes a larger number of people to be all end up in one big flat bucket systematically. That means people are stuck in their levels for such a long time with compensation equally stale regardless of their performance every cycle, every year. Lots of internal buzz words created and marketing tactics used by the leadership and HR to decorate as if changes are coming, but those gestures usually fall flat quickly with little action carried out or little effort made to follow through. It’s all about optics and a quick boost. The upper management doesn’t seem to care about making actual changes as they are so far removed from reality. Indifferent middle managers are busy caring for their own position and agenda. The internal doctrine based on a certain ideology silence people but boosts & praises only one sided voices outwardly. It’s also often used by the managers as a means to shun and alienate people with different perspectives or opinions.

    Advice to Management

Recently there are a lot of turnover and you should pay attention to why. It’s an almost 20-year-old company that still uses the ‘growth pain’ as an excuse internally and externally.

I worked at Sonos full-time for more than a year

    Pros

A stable business that you can earn your salary if you work hard enough - which depends on your team. Opportunities to learn and get exposed to different aspects of consumer electronics development cycles due to its size and fairly open environment

    Cons

Leadership delivered promises based on dreamt numbers, not projectable facts. Marketing tricks were used to boost internal morality while the reality at the end hurts the other way. Honesty to its capability is questionable

    Advice to Management

Be humble and realistic to your goals and promises. Keep making up stories and squeezing your employees will not lead to long term gain unless the company is satisfied staying where it is

I have been working at Sonos full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Sonos culture top-down from Patrick Spence is unlike any other company I've work for. Sonos consistently says, "We're here to empower you to do the best work of your lives". This statement is backed by the leadership and I've always felt empowered to work on amazing new things. The variety of work you can work on at Sonos is really amazing as well. It's not often you get to work with world-class software and hardware engineers in the same company.

I have been working at Sonos full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - Good culture: transparent, collaborative, Golden rules and people are generally very down to earth, having a common goal to work towards. - Flexible hours as long as you can deliver, work life balance - Company encourages managers to help you build your growth plan.

    Cons

    - Location.... Santa Barbara is a sleepy, isolated town, lack of housing and rent is ridiculously high for what it has a offer. - Decision making can be slow due to the amount of stake holders involved (and everyone has a voice) - Still experiencing some growing pain, sorting out the best processes and practices to adapt the ever changing market
