The Best Company I've Ever Worked For!
29 Jul 2022 - Learning Developer in Dallas, TXRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Southwest Airlines practices the element of inclusion more than any other company I've worked with. Everyone has a voice, and the element of respect is unconditionally present at all times. NO WORDS will ever describe how indebted I feel to be apart of this company. It's a priceless feeling!
Cons
Honestly, there are no cons currently.
We’re so glad to have you as part of the Southwest Family! Overall amazing, but complacent and stuck in the past
22 May 2023 - Associate Software Engineer in Minneapolis, MNRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Southwest is hailed as one of the best companies to work for and rightly so: - 9.3% 401k match - fantastic work/life balance (rarely ever over 35 hrs/week) - flight benefits - amazing general culture - pay is relatively competitive for DFW - interesting problems - toxic teams are very few and far between - volunteering is suggested and can be done during work hours - lots of company events - ...
Cons
The downsides of this company are due to the remnants of older workers: - complacent workers - lack of drive and passion since the majority of engineers are older folk - many are institutionalized and stuck in their ways: hard requirements for time-in-seat that prevents fast career growth, lack of desire to change for the better, plenty of "that's how we've always done it" attitude - many teams that work with much older technologies (VB6, Java 7, Struts) - teams are project-focused rather than product, so apps are left collecting dust until something breaks or until it's up for the "chopping block"

401k matching, 9% you contribute.
Cons
401K you contribute up to 9%, compared to Delta its 3% the rest the company pays. so you just lost 9% pay check from 30$ an hr. Health benefits are not the best but decent, but it will cost you least 100-200$ a month depending on plan, thats another money you shell out. Compared to UPS free health or United's plan which covers at 100% on most items. vs 80/20 plan here. 3rd week of vacation starts on 5th year of service vs all other majors its the third year. You cannot roll over a week of vacation, vs other majors up to 3 years. Company is a low cost carrier so with most things expect to shell out money on most of the tooling other majors carry in house. Also note that management often skimps on overtime, and a lacking HR department. So expect the workload of 2 or 3 mechanics to 1 ratio. In other words most of the time you're on your own. No pain no gain and no sympathyzers for the injured. You will work on tight deadlines and supervisers who come from swear shops like AAR or those sweatshop outlets.

Great long term career
4 May 2023 - Operations Supervisor in Houston, TXRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Management is great depending which station you’re at. Benefits and compensation are good. Flexible schedule sometimes, but you have to earn it by seniority and putting in years to get weekends off. You can move up fast if you work hard and are a great team player.
Cons
Flexibility. First 6 months of probation were the worst 6 months… if you are 4 mins late you receive an occurrence and a point. If you get 3 occurrences/3 points you are terminated ( during 6 month probation) however after you will have a little more flexibility but points and occurences can add up/ can’t go over 9 points etc.. depends on your labor relations. I am non contract employee however we still have expectations that recently changed because people no longer want to come to work or show up late. They ruined it for the hard workers.
