I worked at Spencer Stuart full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

I worked at Spencer Stuart for over 20 years, loved the business, and was very proud to be part of such a highly respected firm. The organization is very well run with strong leadership, terrific people who are motivated and very focused on serving clients in the highest quality manner. The firm works hard to present diverse slates of candidates and has been a leader in the placement of women on Boards of Directors. The benefits program is strong and the training and development programs are well resourced and thoughtful. What I especially appreciated is that the firm rewards individual initiative within a team environment. The industry and functional practices are flexible enough to encourage and support a sense of intrapreneurship. Also, the systems and database are top notch as are the research associates.

    Cons

Like most client service oriented firms you can't always achieve an ideal work-life balance. If you are reluctant to roll up your sleeves and put in the hours, this is not the business for you. Similarly, if business development/bringing in new business is not something that you enjoy...this is not the role for you. As an additional point (especially in today's environment), the firm has not been as effective as they should and can be in terms of racial diversity (only 2% of consultant base is black).

I worked at Spencer Stuart full-time

    Pros

Great client base; strong academic acumen of consultants and global reach.

    Cons

Name one associate with an ethnically diverse background that has risen from associate to consultant/partner at Spencer Stuart. Unless you're white and one of the boys and part of the Country Club Set or blonde haired blue eyes, you've got no chance of making consultant here, which is frightening given the client base is so ethnically diverse.

I worked at Spencer Stuart full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Medical benefits are the best I've ever seen

    Cons

This is a very racist firm. I can't believe what is allowed. I have seen racist jokes circulated between senior consultants. There was once situation during which a white woman from the Stamford office attempted to physically block 2 black employees from entering a party for a departing employee. The 2 black employees were invited. Even if they were not, how is this acceptable behavior? Minority team members have been excluded from team gatherings. Natural black hairstyles are frowned upon. Too ethnic/threatening. Pregnancy is mentioned in performance reviews. Executive assistants are regularly pitted against one another. Physical handicaps are mocked. Women purposely walk into women they dislike in the office. It's disgusting. Complain to your manager or Human Resources and absolutely nothing is done! You're just told, "well, that's just the way s/he is". I wouldn't advise anyone to work here ever. The only reason they pay 100% for psychological care is because you need it if you're going to torture yourself at this place.

I worked at Spencer Stuart part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Everyone was nice and really wanted to help in any way they could.

    Cons

The internship didn't have a structure, it was mainly just helping out where they needed help.
