I have been working at Sun Life full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good benefits, bonus if you qualify. I like my coworkers for the most part.

    Cons

Department has been short staffed for the whole 6 years I've been here; so much mandatory overtime. Little to no room for movement. Lots of promises made but not kept. Different rules for different people; definitely play favourites. Raises this year weren't even cost of living even though business increased and company made billions. They say they are flexible with good work...

I worked at Sun Life full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The salary is relatively good, as well as the benefits

    Cons

    - Environment is very intimidation. Atmosphere of loosing your job. No room for flexibility and stuck with old technology

    Advice to Management

Be open minded and motivating to all your team member and not just those in your click

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Sun Life full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great company-paid flexible benefits Office is closed on weekends and statutory holidays Breaks every 1.5-3 hours (not really a pro, taking calls back to back for 3 hours is tedious as hell)

    Cons

Micromanagement Unrealistic goals: even when they are met, management will look for anything they can to focus on your negative points. Time frames to complete a call have been shortened, but more tasks are being added to the workload. Explain that! Management team is its own clique and very obviously shows favouritism towards certain employees. No room for advancement, but...

    Advice to Management

Learn to let your employees use the washroom for 3 minutes without being penalized for it. Appreciate the work your employees put into doing well. Stop looking for something wrong in an otherwise perfect transaction.

I worked at Sun Life full-time

    Pros

New CEO who knows the employee benefits business, which the US firm has staked its future on. Open to data analytics and innovation from designated individuals.

    Cons

Firm has staked its future on voluntary benefits, but has few innovative products to break into a market dominated by industry leaders. Low salaries, inconsistent meritocracy, few innovative employee benefits products, few industry leading divisions except stop-loss and international. Corporate culture is so top down and job security is so tenuous due to the new CEO, cost cutting goals, adn constant reorganization that...

    Advice to Management

Reward according to innovation and performance. Reduce hierarchical/top down approach to strategies. Encourage experimentation at all levels of the firm. Encourage the making of mistakes, instead of allowing only top management and favored managers to experiment with new ideas. This will reduce the tendency for higher executives -- or those favored by senior leadership -- to practice blaming those with lower titles when...

    No opinion of CEO

I worked at Sun Life full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Ability to work from home. Work-life balance is excellent. Substantial vacation time. Good exit packages when layoffs occur. If you're complacent you can stay here for a long time.

    Cons

Yearly layoffs and they often occur around the holidays. They've been eliminating older employees for years now. If you're over 50 you're on the chopping block. Office culture in Canada is night and day compared to US. Folks in CA like their job and they're proud of the company. People in the US show up for a pay check and often wonder if they're part of the next round of layoffs. Office politics is brutal....

    Advice to Management

Start running the company as one, not separate entities. Don't ever buy a stadium and then lay off 3500 employees the next day. Stop laying off US employees annually. Stop layoffs at Christmas.
