I worked at Suzlon Wind Energy full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    1. Long standing legacy of pioneering wind energy development in India.

    2. Brand Suzlon has recognition in India as well as abroad, i. e. USA, Australia, South Africa.

    3. The management and research department has a very good grasp on technical and scientific understanding of manufacturing wind turbines and performing wind potential analysis of various geographical sites.

    4. Extremely efficient execution team from technical site however, business planning could be improved much better.

    Cons

    1. As symptomatic of old companies/ previous market leaders, Suzlon has not been able to adapt to new market conditions despite having excellent technical team. Eg. Suzlon could have ventured into transmission line business, purely EPC business, component manufacturing, battery manufacturing.

    2. Huge accumulated losses and highly leveraged company.

    3. Only the Chairman, Mr. Tulsi Tanti thinks about improving the business. Except him, no one in senior management has business/ profitability oriented outlook. One reason for such scenario is absence of appreciation for novel ideas. There is an urgent need to innovate in Suzlon if it needs to survive.

    4. Lesser said the better it is on the issue of departmental politics and every manager looking out for their own interests above the interests of the company.

    5. Until the management takes hard decisions, Suzlon would not be able to become a profitable company.

    6. No professional can expect to grow their career in a loss making company which needs to lay off 2000 employees every year.

    Advice to Management

    1. Take professional help, reinnovate yourself.

    2. Get a turnaround seasoned CEO who knows business and not just execution. Suzlon needs to fund back its business mojo.

    3. Chintan Shah was your eyes and ears into the government policy. Use the advantage of being fully Indian and ask for domestic content requirement condition in wind and solar contracts.

    4. Stop boasting about concept to commissioning prowess. Suzlon needs to focus on specific process within this project cycle with high liquidity and high profitability. For eg. Transmission line business, sub-station management business, servicing of wind turbines, manufacturing WTG component etc.
