"Where careers go to die"

Pros

Working with the Healthline team next door. Watching that team starting to spread its wings after years of top-down oppression was refreshing.

Cons

If you're interviewing here, you'll understand immediately why this is 'where careers go to die'. The vibe/energy at Talix is NOT a mistake. This is a top-down organization under the watchful eye of the CEO. Notice everything while you're there. Cheap cubical walls, plastic plants, cheap/falling apart equipment, zero attention to and lack of team collaborative areas. If you're 10 minutes late, it will be noticed by the CEO. The vast majority of the office clears out daily at 5pm. Executive team flat out lies in interviews knowing the place is toxic and says the CEO is open to and wanting change at Talix, don't believe it. Again, notice your surroundings when on-site. Talix has been in that space for a decade and the lack of care and concern for the comfort of their employees is undeniable.

I’m sorry to hear that you had a negative experience at Talix. As a startup that recently spun out from our parent company, we are indeed still building our identity as a new, standalone company and working on creating the right office culture for our employees. Some might say this is the most exciting time to join a company, where employees have the chance to make a real contribution to the organization and play an important role in shaping the company culture, benefits and perks. Thank you for your candid feedback – we will take into consideration all of this and continue to improve our new office space, culture, etc. Some things we have on the docket at Talix are: weekly Happy Hours, a fully stocked snack wall, BBQs, and much more!

Pros

Compensation is good. That is the only way they will get anyone to work there.

Cons

Toxic work environment, cheap equipment all round, some passive aggressive and cliquey co-workers , there's an almost non-existent development process or tools, and some managers feel it's okay to yell at you if one tight deadline is not met. The CEO himself is not a bad person, but senior management and Talix at large is dominated by people from a particular demographic that may discriminate against you if you don't look like them, however you will likely enjoy your time here if you do look like them.

I am disappointed to hear that this person had an unpleasant experience at Talix. Sometimes, the fit isn’t right. Nonetheless, we are an early stage start-up led by proven winners who rely on being practical as well as being creative and bold. We also know hard work pays off, and that is part of why we’ve successfully served many of the largest companies in the world. Most importantly, we believe in mutual respect and strive to honor our core values and ethics. We are also proud of the fact that we have a diverse culture and embrace and celebrate many religions and cultures amongst us throughout the year. A person’s color, race and other demographics do not define a company; it is intellect, passion and dedication that makes for a successful team.

Pros

They’re desperate to retain employees so compensation is competitive

Cons

All engineering tasks are dictated by senior management in a top down manner. These managers have been with the company since before it was spun off of Healthline, and are mainly in their positions because of their seniority as the first handful of employees to work there. Any new ideas from the underlings are disregarded. Coming up with data driven decisions is seen as a waste of time. There is very little technical planning done, mainly bug fixes and ad hoc changes to a platform designed with little foresight into future needs to adapt it to new NLP methods

My experience is that it takes a lot more than competitive compensation to retain employees in the Bay Area. We are proud of the fact that we experience relatively low turnover amongst our newer hires, and as cited by the reviewer, by those who have stayed and want to “do it again” by building another highly valued information technology company. I also agree with the reviewer that being a good manager of people takes on-going investment in skill training, use of new management tools, and so forth. It’s important for our diversified leadership team to listen to the input of all staff, whether it be through ongoing anonymous employee surveys, career path planning sessions, brown bag lunches, or annual performance reviews. We are constantly striving to employ best in class tools and the latest technology methods where applicable. We are competing in a hot industry and so ALL of our decisions have to be and are performance data driven. Being data-driven is a requirement for success in this day and age.
