Good job for college grads. Start as an intern and move to full-time. Remote and flexible hours. Benefits like 12 weeks of maternity leave, health insurance, and a 3 week sabbatical.
Pays very poorly. They like to say increases are based on merit, but when it comes down to it the only raises I have received have been cost of living and I'm struggling financially. Constantly told I am a high performer (received the top of the top review rating you can get this past review cycle), but that doesn't reflect in my pay. I expect a response from n2 saying pay is based on market value and if I'm not happy with what I'm making to reach out to my leadership. I disagree that it is based on market value and I have talked to leadership, it doesn't accomplish anything. New hires basically make what I make, and n2 isn't adjusting current employees salaries accordingly so I train new people with no experience just to find out we make the same. If n2 would pay better it would be a way more fulfilling job.7

If you work hard, you can make great money. Ramp up is brutal but doable if you are a hard worker.
Old Boys Club. This company shifts and changes things dramatically yearly if not more, making it like a start up. Far more than needed. Unstable in many ways. Also should be more open about "ad value" costs. They charge 3x the cost of printing to make sure that they are making a good deal of cash off of you. Product does not deliver what clients want as Cost is way too high, there are not enough potential homes that can do business and the product is filled with ads so there is little chance to be seen. They even say “the magazine without events doesn’t work.” Events are not regular and often there are not enough residents there to bring business. They are fun, the stories on the newsletter are good and read bit don’t equate to business for more than a handful of realtors, High end remodelers and. I niche businesses. Etc..roi is low. N2 charges way to much to its area directors in addition to costs outside for Staff and gifts and errors and quarterly taxes and extra pages. Relationships that begin great sour due to low roi, requirement of Area Director to collect payments when they don’t go thrift, which affects income, and so one may go through 300 businesses in 3 or 4 years. Contracts trap business into paying thousands for ads that don’t bring many calls and so the relationships are harmed. Model is not sustainable so many quality businesses close. We stress the importance of clear expectations and open communication with our clients from day one. Anyone who does not follow this is not a fit for this opportunity, which may have turned out to be the case for you. We have tens of thousands of happy, returning businesses who partner with their local publication to reach their ideal clients and are sad to hear you don’t believe the clients you served were a good fit. As an Area Director, you have the ability to drive your financial outcomes and we have not changed our commission structure in many years. ** When reading this, keep in mind that I was a W-2 employee at the Home Office, which is a completely different side of the business than the Field (i.e. “Area Director”). Area Directors and their teams sell ads and generate content for magazines while the Home Office designs and produces the products. Remote work; flexible hours; full Adobe Creative Suite subscription; low-stress work environment; an understanding and accommodating company that can cater to the needs of the individual; potential for short work days/weeks. This is an easy, low-stress position that is ideal for young professionals who have low living expenses and are looking for a resume-building position, or individuals who are looking for supplemental income for their household. The position is primarily quantitative-based and consists of creating and revising ads for clients that advertise in the magazines, as well as quality-checking provided ads. Ad touch goals are set at the beginning of the week (typically between 20-30 per day), so if the ad queue leans more towards revisions/provided ads or dries up, it is not uncommon to have short work days once you have learned the ropes of the job.
N2 is not a “bad” company to work for - it’s far from it - but it’s not perfect either, and I want to share my perspective having worked for them through the rapid growth of 2014-2018, as well as the plateau of the past several years. I believe that a vast majority of the people working at this company are well-intentioned, and I hope that my insights will help explain why I am calling this position a stepping stone opportunity. I probably could have just left this section at “low pay” and moved on, but let’s take a deeper dive: 1. Low pay: It’s no secret among Home Office team members that low pay has always been a point of contention. The below-average salaries are whitewashed with non-monetary benefits like access to a fitness instructor and nutritionist, remote work, wellness stipends, a friendly, people-centric work culture, and more common corporate benefits such as 401k match and health insurance. Recently, sabbaticals have been added for employees who have worked there for longer than 4 years. It’s as if upper level management is trying to do everything they can to avoid directly addressing the most common frustration that their employees bring up. In eight years working for this company, I never received a merit or cost of living increase. I went almost three years making the exact same salary before requesting a raise in 2021; I received a 3% increase and was told that I was now making the most I could possibly make in my position, regardless of quantitative or qualitative output. At time of writing, the ad designer salary starts around $40k/year and caps (they might tell you that there’s no cap, but there is) at $50k with the opportunity to make up to $4,500/year in bonuses if you average 40+ ad touches per day with > 95% accuracy. It equates to working approximately 30-40% more than the required workload for a 9-10% bonus. If you get promoted to lead one of these teams, you can expect your salary to land somewhere within the mid/high $40k to mid $50k range (yes, this means that some of the more tenured designers on your team will probably be making more than you - plus you’ll forfeit your ability to earn bonuses). Many mid-level leaders - even those who have worked for N2 for over a decade - still haven’t cracked through $60k. A lot of employees (team leaders included) work part-time jobs or freelance in addition to working for N2. One of the company’s “core values” is a work/life balance, so I find it contentious that a significant percentage of the workforce feels the need to seek out supplemental income with added “work” during what is supposed to be their “life” time. As with previous reviews noting low pay, it is likely that somebody from their PR team will reply to this review and reference their pay analysis software, Payscale. If you look at N2’s profile page on the Payscale website (Google “N2 Publishing Payscale”), the company currently earns a "Fair Pay" rating of 2.4 out of 5 stars for their compensation packages. My understanding from talking with former colleagues who have worked directly with the software is that it is utilized to hone in on the low end of a salary range rather than to truly compensate competitively. 2. Lack of advancement opportunities: The ad team of about 25-30 designers is headed up by three team leads, so there is very little room for career advancement unless you decide to change departments or a leader leaves or transitions into a different role. However, as I previously noted, promotions don’t necessarily garner a significant pay increase; my salary as an ad designer was higher than some of the leaders that I reported to, as well as those who managed teams in other departments. 3. Field and Clients frustrated with ad quality: Something that has become more vocalized in the past few years is complaints from clients and the Field (Area Directors, their teams, and even the company’s President/Co-Owner on an impromptu Zoom call with the design team) is that they are frustrated with the quality and effectiveness of N2-designed ads. A quick look at N2’s reviews on Google would have previously confirmed that many clients don’t receive a single direct lead during their 12 to 36 month contracts; however, they appear to now be pulling strings on the backend of their Google Business page to make it more difficult to locate this influx of negative reviews. I believe this issue stems primarily from the company historically seeking out designers based on their abilities to use creative software rather than hiring those with backgrounds in marketing and advertising. This long term oversight has since caught up with them, and the design team has subsequently been pressed to both learn and teach marketing, advertising, and brand management concepts on the fly.8The N2 Company Response4mo

Pay is lower than average. They used to offer merit-based raises/bonuses annually but those are now few and far between. The founders also refuse to consider the need for cost of living raises while they continue to line their own pockets.3The N2 Company Response3mo

100% commission on ad sales so you can essentially make as much money as you’re able to sell. Set your own schedule and work remotely.
The advertisements are expensive for clients and many claim to never receive a direct lead from them. The contracts are air tight so they can’t cancel early, which leads to relationships turning sour and the position becomes more about damage control and trying to appease frustrated clients. Also take note that almost every negative review on this site is followed by several short/vague positive reviews. This is the company unofficially soliciting positive reviews from employees, something I have been asked to do several times and have always refused.6The N2 Company Response8mo
