A true diamond in the rough

      Pros

If you are a builder, this is the place for you, as you will be building the foundations upon which this company will grow. That does also come with ambiguity and needing to find your own direction a lot of times, but that is where many people thrive. And being a fully remote company, you are given the opportunity to work from wherever and almost whenever, but if you can't self motivate, you might not thrive here. Company is full of extremely talented, but also extremely humble and real people. I have never worked for a company where values actually play into everything they do - even behind closed doors. Our values drive our leaders and our leaders live our values day in and day out. The people make Thumbtack incredible and the culture here is second to none. TT is a diamond in the rough when it comes to working in tech. You won't find a better employer.

      Cons

That ambiguity I mentioned previously. If you thrive in ambiguity, you will thrive here, if you do not and you need to be given direction constantly, TT might not be the place for you. It's been said many times before but a 401k match sure would be nice. Hopefully after we go public.

      Sensible and transparent

      Pros

Thumbtack sales environment is a golden gem among a pile of charcoal when it comes to the sales industry. The leadership is transparent and listens to its employees whether it’s a small request or a larger topic. They have a very ethical and professional approach to things and hold themselves to a high standard that I admire. They give their employees autonomy in their jobs and it’s fully remote permanently. The culture and environment is not something you can put a price on. The topics discussed behind closed doors consist of empathy and strategy to be better leaders than already executed. Great place to work and amazing career opportunities. This place clearly cares about its employees and it chooses a mix of personalities for leadership with different perspectives to make a complete and sensible picture.

      Cons

It’s still a private newer company (last 12 years) sales department is even newer so there are lots of changes and pivots. To work here you just be flexible and able to embrace change.

Work-life balance is a thing of the past

      9 Feb 2023 - Anonymous Employee

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Work from home, great team, fair pay, good medical benefits, and a lot of company holidays.

      Cons

No 401k matching. There is no longer a work-life balance. You will need those company holiday closures because taking PTO isn't really an option unless you want to get even further behind. Workloads have significantly increased for junior and mid-level employees since the December 2022 layoff. Most of those laid off were junior managers and below. Leadership was not impacted by the layoffs. This has resulted in as much, if not more, work being done by a much smaller workforce. It's not sustainable. I hear complaints related to this from peers across the company. I'm personally putting in excess of 12-14 hours a day during the week and a few hours every weekend. I also worked during my recent PTO. Unfortunately, I continue to get behind. As a side note, I have consistently received above-average performance reviews so it's not that I can't manage my time or am unproductive. I used to preach the praises of working at Thumbtack, but I can no longer recommend working here. I'm currently looking for a new opportunity.

Great place to work full of mission-driven, intellectual people

      Pros

Thumbtack is a really great company with a very strong culture and an obsessive focus on improving itself. Everyone from the engineers to the recruiters to the operations teams are approachable, curious, humble, dedicated to learning, and fun to talk with. The product makes a difference in people's lives and the opportunity is huge, which makes the environment exciting and the work satisfying. Decisions from hires to product changes to ad buys are made in a very thoughtful, rigorous manner, but bad decisions are owned up to and abandoned quickly. Very little ego or politics within the company, as everyone seems committed to making the best decisions to help the team, and working hard to make that decision making process as analytically rigorous and free from bias as possible. As a start up there are many opportunities for team members to contribute and expand their horizons and leadership offers support for people to figure out and implement new things. I love coming to work here.

      Cons

The relentlessly thoughtful decision making process means that the company can move more slowly than it perhaps should at times. Engineer hiring has proven to be a major bottleneck due to absurdly high standards for new hires. As a result, teams that could get by with less than world-class engineers are left without any engineering resources at all. Also as a result the product has simple, glaring flaws that go left unaddressed, and there are clearly areas of the company set up years ago that have been given no thought in a while as attention is focused elsewhere. Huge opportunity for new hires to fix these things and help this company realize its potential.

Great culture, people and pay. Poor bets by Leadership

      Pros

Completely remote with over average salary in tech. Great benefits, the people and the culture is wonderful.

      Cons

Thumbtack CEO and other executives need to be held accountable for doing 2 layoffs within 2 years. They bet big on focusing on home-owners and the product changed marginally with hardly any meaningful features being added in the last 18 months. Further, the Membership program that was launched did not perform as expected. The CEO set sights on hiring aggressively in 2022 and then suddenly laid off 14% of the company, including tenured employees in Dec 2022. Poor leadership and execution from the CEO, CFO and other executives.

-Very Cliquey; Employees are either long-timers or brand new. It's very hard to shake the "newbie" title even after being there a while. -Company doesn't seem able to execute on its business model. -Leadership talks a lot but actions speak louder than words.

      The Never Ending PIP

      Pros

Off-sites were amazing. Benefits were also way above average. Specifically the medical insurance and PTO.

      Cons

There are SO MANY ways to be put on a performance improvement plan and once you’re on one, it’ll take MONTHS until you can feel secure again. Management made a ton of changes at once and the outbound team flopped hard. Managers will tell you to not worry, that they can’t put half the sales team on a PIP and you’ll be totally fine. But then when you don’t hit their unreasonable quota on the month they made some gnarly changes, they’ll fire you. Hit 100% of quota the month prior? Forget about it, doesn’t matter. They’ve been talking about going public for quite some time. In doing so, they need to become profitable. To achieve that, what better way than to greatly reduce staff - especially the sales team that they scaled way too quickly in 2022.
