      Great Pay, Horrible Atmosphere

      29 Jul 2021 - Manager Track Maintenance

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Base pay and bonus at the end of the year are good. Having the ability to lead a team and make positive changes is empowering.

      Cons

Senior leadership has a culture of management by fear. You will be cursed at, belittled, and berated at times. Work life balance is abysmal. You are told you have off days but that’s really not the case. Your phone will ring 24/7/365. There is almost zero recognition for performing well, but lots of negative recognition for anything else. You are easily replaceable and depending on your direct management you won’t have much support. I often find myself laying down as soon as I finally get home for a few minutes just to make my blood pressure reduce a little bit.

Avoid being railroaded by avoiding the railroad

27 Nov 2021 - Operations in Los Angeles, CA

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Pay and benefits Interesting people to work with

      Cons

24/7/365 work environment so you'll normally work a lot of unusual hours with odd days off. Very little to no regard for employees' safety, well-being, physical/mental health. Usually a lot of hostility, workplace bullying, unrealistic expectations, failing equipment. The pay and benefits are nice but only because they're union-negotiated benefits. You have to really decide if the lifestyle, sacrifices, and toxic work environment are truly worth it.

Great if single and have no family

      29 Aug 2021 - Train Dispatcher

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      Pay and benefits are amazing

      Cons

On call 24/7/365 with no guaranteed days off. Rotating schedule actually means you can work all 3 shifts in one week. Not knowing your schedule for the next week til Friday evening and then it can change daily in spite of that. Rapidly adding responsibilities to dispatchers at such a pace that they can't do the job well and then holding them to unattainable standards
