      Bureaucracy

8 Aug 2021 - General Director in Omaha, NE

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Great pay and benefits. Great amenities if you work in Omaha, such as the parking garage with an attached tunnel, pharmacy, gym, healthcare facility, cafeteria, and credit union. Don't believe what you read bout the CEO. He's actually a good guy who is just doing his job. He's got some snakes in his garden.

      Cons

Bullying, gossiping and cronyism are rampant in Omaha headquarters. Managing your personal reputation is about 50% of your job. That kind of culture is exhausting and leaches away energy that could be better applied to doing great work. Integrity is almost discouraged and considered naive.

Avoid being railroaded by avoiding the railroad

27 Nov 2021 - Operations in Los Angeles, CA

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Pay and benefits Interesting people to work with

      Cons

24/7/365 work environment so you'll normally work a lot of unusual hours with odd days off. Very little to no regard for employees' safety, well-being, physical/mental health. Usually a lot of hostility, workplace bullying, unrealistic expectations, failing equipment. The pay and benefits are nice but only because they're union-negotiated benefits. You have to really decide if the lifestyle, sacrifices, and toxic work environment are truly worth it.

Great if single and have no family

      29 Aug 2021 - Train Dispatcher

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      Pay and benefits are amazing

      Cons

On call 24/7/365 with no guaranteed days off. Rotating schedule actually means you can work all 3 shifts in one week. Not knowing your schedule for the next week til Friday evening and then it can change daily in spite of that. Rapidly adding responsibilities to dispatchers at such a pace that they can't do the job well and then holding them to unattainable standards

      Pros

Decent Pay and benefits. Great Retirement thru railroad retirement if you can keep your job long enough. Lots of money making opportunities. Little to no supervision.

      Cons

Terrible communication. Incredibly unprofessional leadership in the middle management area. Horrible attendance policy. Management constantly whittles away the good benefits that make it worth staying with the company. Terrible information about potential work events (Line-ups). Horrible management culture that refuses to change itself.
